Alright this is a weird one for precision but it's the type I like and I need better than traditional hunting accuracy.

I have a coyote problem and baby horses in my field. The length of my field is 400yards with heavy brush and tree line. I have been looking at Cadex and MDT platforms. So looking for advice and caliber options? I would also like to dual purpose this as a deer rifle (weight not a big issue). Number one though is accuracy at 100-400 yards!!! I know my guns and my calibers but I am struggling with this decision as it's a buy once senario. L

Wish budget was higher but looking at $2000 optic included.

Front runner at this time was Savage Stealth 6.5CM with Vortex 1-8 strike eagle $2200ish

the 6.5 is not the choice it's a flavour 😜
first chive hands and really the only choice a 243 win
tikka rifle scope 4.6x14
preferably not vortex
burris is the best $ value
this discussion should end hear but it will go on and on

Less bullet more scope
Ideally a 6mm or 22 caliber
.243 is the OG dual purpose and would probably work well. Any of the new 6mm wonder cartridges too. 22-250 if it’s legal for deer in your area. .223 will work, may have delayed killing sometimes at those extended ranges.
I think you’ll end up wanting a bit more magnification. 4-12 is the traditional choice for that application. 1-8 can work, coyotes are sometimes hard to see

22 Creedmoor with a 7 twist (8 twist as a min). Load up and down as necessary to suit your tastes ((I used starting loads and it hussles). 68gr to 95gr with my fave the 95gr Sierra... 75gr and 80gr ELDMs will also do a ton of good work for less money and easier to source.

You are welcome

Jerry

PS unless you plan to shoot a lot, and then 223...

A heavy barrel Tikka Varmint in .243Win, a decent scope with reliable turrets, a laser rangefinder, preferably a Leica with ballistics app. A good supported rest and a bait pile wouldn’t hurt either. Throw in a couple of wind flags out there. If you could find the same rifle in 25/06Rem or 270Win that would be better but they are scarcer than hen’s teeth,,because I bought them all. lol

…and if you’re REALLY serious get a thermal scope setup and a cellular camera on your bait pile…most coyotes work the night shift. I have seen horses panicked by coyotes and they knock down a fence and end up standing on a roadway at 2am. That’s quite a liability to someone driving at night.

I use a 223 or a 22 250 for coyotes.
If you go with a 243 rifle, you can get Winchester 243 58 grain varmint and then use if for deer hunting 95 to 105 grain.
Its very versatile.
When I trap for coyotes I use a 22 short in between the eyes. :giggle:

Plain old T3X in .223 should be more than adequate. Could go for .22-250 or .243 if you like, but cost to shoot and barrel life weigh heavily in favour of the .223 given the parameters of the task at hand.

I bought a Howa 1500 in 308 this year for moose season from Bass Pro for less than $1500. Came with a bipod and 4-16x50 nikko stirling scope. I'm hitting fairly consistently 400 yards at the range. Happy with it so far. Decent bang for the buck

I would just use something I already own if killing coyotes is the goal. If you want to keep the pelts than a 22cal makes sense, but id reach for my 243. Or my 7mm08 if I felt like it that day.

Do you currently have a rifle or will this purchase be your first one ??? if you already have a rifle what caliber is it ???? your question is really broad and doesn't give much information except that your thinking 6.5 CM which will certainly shoot accurately out to 400 yards as will many others in the centerfire 22's or 6mm or 7mm calibers. I assume that you do not reload so you need something that has factory ammunition readily available, other than that it comes down to personal choice, so many good options.

Another thing you have to think about is if you are a new shooter a coyote is not very big especially at 400 yards, you'll want somthing that is not overly expensive to feed so you can practice and become proficient at that distance
