I'll tell you what they did to it....They shot it, a LOT!!
The throat is washed from a lot of burning powder, and a replacement barrel is in order.
I have done that same thing to a number of rifles over the years, a couple of Swifts, a 7mm STW, 3 - 6mm Remington's and a couple of 6.5x55's.
It takes a fair bit of shooting to wash 4-5" of throat and rifling, but it will happen if you shoot it enough.
Of course, one can accelerate the rate of erosion, simply by shooting the rifle "hot" [many shot in succession without allowing it to cool]
Nevertheless, it is probably worth rebarrelling, particularly if it has sentimental value as well.
