Took the kids up to what remains of their great-great Grandfather's blacksmith shop Sunday evening with spades in hand. Found a Remington receiver in the sod there three or four years ago and thought they would have some fun. Hannah dug up some clinkers from the old forge and thought they were pretty neat, along with a double edge axe head and lots of junk. I was digging in the sod and came up with a chunk of rifle barrel about 13-14" long.

It is octagon, .800"+/- across the flats with a .379" bore.
.375" dovetail for front sight about .925" center dovetail to muzzle face.
There is a narrow alignment (?) pin grove on the bottom flat, .125" in from the muzzle.
Mage tube support dovetail is .750" wide and roughly 3.715" from its center to the muzzle face.

I dont have any rifles like this. My old copy of gun traders makes me think it is an 1873 Winchester in 38-56.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks

'73 Winchester was never made in .38-56.

The .38-56 is based on the .45-70 casing. The only Winchesters which would have used it would have been the long-action 1886 and the single-shot 1885.

The 1873 was chambered in .22RF, .32-20, .38-40 and .44-40. The .22 is SUPER rare.

The .38-40 and .38-56 both used a twist rate of 1 turn in 20 inches.

Hope this helps.
