Myself and 2 friends from work have decided to do a bear hunt this year. Probably in about 3 weeks. None of us have hunted bear before and will not be in the area we will be hunting (Deep River area)to maintain a bait pile before the hunt.
Our plan is to hunt from tree stands and bait the night before.
Any suggestions on how to make this a successful hunt?

How often can you put the bait out?Once a week?I've had success baiting once a week with fryer grease.I dug a hole, filled it with grease, then put a plastic milk crate over it.I put a few heavy rocks on the top of the crate to keep the yotes and coons from getting it all.

I haven't had success yet with it, but a Honey burn (or maple syrup burn) seems to work. Just get a small camp stove and boil a pot of honey or syrup, upwind of where you suspect the bears to be.

I am also told by experienced bear hunters that if you can get a beaver carcass hanging from a tree (out of reach) about 3 or 4 days ahead of time,it will attract bears. if you can't get it out early, try hanging it for a few days anywhere to get the stink started than take it to your spot.

The best thing would be to get someone to bait for you, if you can't do it yourself.

One of the guys that I am going with is originally from that area and is trying to find a friend from back home to bait for us but he's not too sure if he can find anyone. Other than that we would basically just be doing it the night before.

I have heard of the honey burn aswell and was thinking about trying it.

What is the best hunting setup for 3 people?
I was thinking a trianlge pattern facing out fron a single bait spot to get them on the way in.

With 3 people you are tripling your chance of being busted by the bear... but I guess a triangle would be the way to go. I would far prefer to go in singles or doubles, maybe have 2 bait sights.

You can also by bear incense sticks, I bought some but have yet to use them.

Good luck.

I would definately try to have it baited before you make the trip, even if only once and I would suggest baiting it with large amounts of restaurant grease. Find a restaurant that has a special bin where they deposit their used grease and be sure to have a sealable container plus a large bin to put the filled container into(its very messy). I find the grease works best because once one bear finds the bait the grease gets all over their paws and the scent is carried down the game trail. Any bear that crosses the bait bear's path will pick up the scent and proceed to the bait. If you are unable to bait until the night before hang vanilla in a tree and hope for the best.

Good news!!! I was talking to my friend at work today. The hunt is a go for sure and he said his dad had agreed to bait the site for us for 2 weeks or so before the hunt. Picked up my bear license today. Just have to put my new scope on my rifle and I am good to go. Can't wait. :D

better sight in your gun with the new scope then you are good to go

Look for natural sources of water and bear food, that's a good start for choosing a location. Your short on time, so try not to make a big disturbance when setting up your sites.

I like to let the bear decide which way he wants to approach the bait before hanging my tree stand. Here's a zoomed in view from one of my stands.

Likely too much for you to pull off this season, but it'll give you something to consider for next year. Use you shooting lane trimings to make a V shape "guide" for the bear. This will give you the optimal quartering away shot at the barrel.

Control your scent. Hunt in pairs from seperate locations, with one guy watching the downwind side.

Purchase some "Bear Stinky Sticks" - basically insence -they let off a big stink in a short period of time.

Don't put out too much bait.

Good luck and keep us posted.

If he is baiting for us before hand should I still do the vanilla in a tree or the stinky sticks the day of the hunt? If so which one should I use?

Either or. The smell will also help cover your scent. We had good success with bacon and bacon grease as well. If possible, have your buddies dad refresh the bait site while you guys quietly set-up in your stands. When daddy leaves, bears think the coast is clear. If there is any competitioin for the bait the bears will waste no time coming in.

We hopefully will have our stands up of the friday night and Start hunting Saturday morning.

I like the idea about him baiting while we set up.

I'm going on my first bear hunt this year too! Has anybody tried using oats as a supplement to baiting bears? I was thinking of using a separate barrel for it.

Just pour it in the barrel, maybe sprinkle some on the ground as well. It will keep them busy licking it up.

Dont be afraid to pour some molasses on the oats to sweeten it up. You can get 58lbs of molasses at the Co-op for $12.
