Need help with info- M Ugarteburu Model Uplander

Hello everyone! I purchased a shotgun at auction and have no clue about it. Bought it since I saw others sell for a nice amount in the USA and Europe. I cannot find any info about it. Looking at it, has a few stamps and serial numbers but no date code or anything. Says S.Berry EDMONTON on both barrels and that is all. Has some rust and I do not know if I should keep it as is or try to freshen it up?

Martin Ugarteburu was a small Spanish gun maker. If you remove the barrels, there should be proof marks on the flat portion of the barrels which will give information referring to chamber length, chokes, proof testing, date code etc. You mentioned that you bought it because you saw similar guns sell for high prices in the US and Europe. That means nothing here as the Canadian market is quite a bit lower as far as value. It also depends on what kind of gun you are looking at. Most makers made guns of varying levels of quality. The gun you show is at the lower end of the scale. As far as S Berry Edmonton on the barrels, I have no clue unless someone inscribed their name on the barrels.

How can you tell it is at the lower end of the spectrum? Judging just off the pictures how much may it be worth? I feel I got a good deal but I doubt I can even use steel to shoot. It has a modified and full choke.
 
We can tell a lot from a couple pictures when we have been in the game for many decades, you wanted info, than argue?
I have had a couple like that , good guns, Hi end , no, depends on your cost, and if you like it that is what counts.
Steel, not with full chokes, these could be thin barrels, would have to be checked.

I wasn't arguing haha! I was just saying how you can tell so I can learn. I bought it as an impulse buy to sell since I thought it was going cheap for a Spanish gun. Think I could ask $1200 or is that being too hopeful? The man at the gun counter said they are thick barrels but best not to risk it. Can I clean the rust off like I do on normal guns with steel wool and hoppes?
 
Not trying to take the wind out of your sails but around $300.00 is more accurate as far as value. Yes you can clean the rust off with steel wool but be careful. If it is pitting, then that is a whole different scenario.

Well that just ruined my Christmas. I paid more than that haha. Seems like now I have a new pheasant and clay busting gun.

Not saying you may not get a bit higher than what I quoted, but $300.00 seems like the typical selling range for these types of guns. If it was a subgauge it would maybe bring more. Yours also has the straight English stock so that may add a bit to the value depending on the buyer.
 
300 to 350 is what id expect to see it sell for. There are many guns in this class. Perfect working guns they just lack the refinements and features of higher grade guns that bring more value. Im in no way trying to offend you just offering my opinion based on my experiences. And yes i have several lower grade sxs guns and truly enjoy them for what they are.

Determine value. Canada has a very small market and prices are much lower than the usa

If you just paid a bit over that, you should be fine, I could see 500.oo, hard to tell from the pictures, 1200.oo no.
Spanish shot guns run the range, one of the best shot guns I ever owned was a Spanish 2 barrel sheet set, that gun these days would cost 20,000.oo to build.
I have had good shooters that cost 200.oo.
How you learn is go to shows, talk to the fellows, spend money, and do that for 60 yrs.
Any gun guy that says they never screwed up is a liar, but I have not messed up very often.
The main thing I have learned is buying because it is cheap, don't make much/ any money.
Quality costs , but as a rule always hold their value.
I don't do much new stuff.
One old collector/ dealer I use to travel with told me years ago that 20 or 30% is way better on a 2000.oo gun than on a 200.oo gun
And the 200.oo gun is a harder sell then a 2000.oo gun.
Clean that up and try it out, stay away from steel, unless you get it checked.
If you posted pictures of the barrel and frame flats ,water table, we could give you more info, if you wanted
 
I’ve been working real hard at learning vintage SxS for 15 years and only recently have stopped feeling like a complete noob. There is a lot to learn and a lot to go wrong
