Hi all,

I have a scoped remington 597 with heavy barrel and I often have FTE, double feed and light primer strikes with it. With a 10 round mag I have at least 1 problem.
I also have sporadic accuracy. With some Winchester ammo I can group 1 inch at 50 yard when it feels like it but every once in a while it throws flyers 4 to 6 inches off left and right. So far this is the best ammo I have found for it.

I was wondering if those issues were common and if there was a fix? Also how tight those two screws on the stock near the trigger group should be?

Thank you for your help.

VQ extractor, buy a new mag, clean the crap out of it because if the bolt isn't all the way forward you'll get what appears to be light strikes ( also, make sure your hammer spring is installed correctly, lots of pics on the interwebs available), find some CCI SV and those screws should not be really tight at all.

A Savage 6 or Stevens 87 will fix that right up.

More seriously, I found that polishing the guide rods or whatever they are called and all of the bearing surfaces on the bolt really helped to smooth the action and make it more consistent.

I also took apart my mags and looked for burrs and any little bits of flash on the follower and on the inside of the mag. Smoothed any such spots with a needle file (the tiny files you see in model building hobby shops).

Also used powdered graphite to lube the thing rather than oil.

Mine fed and fired reliably until some retainer clip fell out of the action at the range one time.

Make sure the set screws for the opperating rods are not tight, back off 1/4 turn. As for the mags I can't help, the 8 10 rounders work flawlessly for me out of the box.

When I had my 597, the ammo it liked best was CCI mini mag 40gr round nose or cci blazer 40gr.

I found that it worked best when it was kept really clean. And by clean I mean spotless and after each outing.

The VQ extractor made a big difference. It made it work quite better. But never got to 100% reliability.

Good luck with your 597. I ended up getting rid of mine as it was getting really frustrating dealing with the FTEs and with the archangel stock I had on, cleaning was a real pain.

10rd aluminum mags worked best as well. The 25 round banana clip was the absolute worst.

Had the same problem with my 597. A thorough cleaning and burnishing the op rods with moly then tighten the set screws until they just touch and back off a 1/4 turn worked wonders for mine. 10 rnd mag has always functioned just fine. 30 rnd Remington mag I removed any flash and lubed. Works better but still will not feed the last round. 25 rnd promag has been fine with just a couple of drops of lube. Both the higher cap mags worked better with just 20 loaded in them.

This and check that the magazine is seating properly. I had 1 magazine that I needed to hold up in place so that it functioned properly before I fixed it.

I'll detail strip it, do a proper clean and inspect the parts you all have suggested to look at. Some polishing on the rods, graphite powder and make sure the screws are not too tight. I know my 10 roung mag feels a bit 'loose' so maybe another mag is in order. The 25 rounds mag never work properly because it doesn't sit flush with the mag well so I only shoot with the 10 round. Thank you everyone!

I found the VQ extractor made a huge difference. When i first got it i could barely get 10 rounds in the 10 and 25 in the 30 so i fought to put 10 and 30 in them and left them loaded for a couple of weks, 10 works great the 30 will only work reliably with 25 . Now i rarely have a ftf or a fte, great fun.

I just want to give an update. I detailed strip the gun and cleaned everything with a brass brush. I lube the guide rod with outer gun oil and wiped the excess off. I noticed on the guide rod there was a dent on both of them at the same place so I put the rod back the other way. I made sure the screws were all tight, then 1/4 back. I didn't shoot the rifle today but my firend did and he had a less stoppages. There was no FTE or double feed but a couple times the bolt locked back with still rounds in the mag.

I had all of the same issues the op did with the same model. After following all the advice given by fellow nutz my rifle still had an unacceptable failure rate. I returned it to the vendor and they gave me another identical 597. The new one runs like a top and eats anything it's given no matter how dirty it gets. Quality seems very inconsistent on these guns but if your vendor can help you out you will get a good one...eventually. It's a cool looking gun and the price is right. I like mine a lot.
