So I decided to swap the free float tube on my DPMS kitty kat for a free floating quad rail. Last week I brought it to my gunsmith's so he could work his magic. He was then able to punch off the front post sight, unscrew my muzzle brake and take off the first part of the tube. The second part is the last part of the tube which is screwed to the receiver, he was not able to take it off(His first time working on an AR, he is mostly into high end bolt guns) Is there anyone who could PLEASE help me out? I will post pics Tomorrow once I have time to grab my rifle from the Gunsmith. Thanks,

Paul

First , don't even think about doing this without a proper upper reciever vise block . These FF tubes ( also the RRA FF tubes are usually insanely tight

Assuming you have the vise block, you need one of these

http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=5595&title=DPMS%20AR-15%20FREE%20FLOAT%20TUBE%20WRENCH

They have pins that engage the DPMS and RRA FF tubes from the reciever end. I have had RRA FF tubes that need both this tool AND a good strap wrench. To give you an idea on how tight these tubes can be, I bent the pins on my wrench

"...His first time working on an AR..." You should have let him pay for his own education. It doesn't mean he's not a good smithy, but not all smithies are capable of working on all types of firearm.

Paul,
Where are you? I have installed many different tubes on AR rifles, both my own and customers rifles, I have two completely different ones in my own cabinet. What type (Brand) are you trying to install and remove?

If you want and you are close, bring it over to me and I'll do it for you.

I am in the NB region. I would mail it to you no problem if you wanna take a look.. I don't care what's the price, I just want my gun in one piece.

ifyou own an ar15 you ready should get a ar15 multi tool, the ar15 is one of the easyist gun to work on, ya can do it all by yourself!

Too bad none of the multitools will be usefull for what he is trying to do....remove a DPMS FF tube

Although you have a generous offer from Scott to remove it, the DPMS FF tool is only $30. This will be less than the shipping cost of the upper. You should buy the proper DPMS FF tube removal tube. It is also usefull on the RRA FF tube ( see link from my post above )

Since its not a gun part, the tool just shows up in the mail from Brownells. While you are at it, you might as well buy the multitool ( DMPS and Smith makes good ones available from Brownells )
