Need help with my Ruger M77 MkII .338 WM

I just sold my M77 MkII .338Mag last week to fund another project  It was the stainless/laminated and the first time I tried it out (Federal factory 225gr) it put three shots into .87" :D I could usually keep three shots inside 1.25" so I really didn't mess with it other than having a gunsmith clean up the trigger when I had all the metalwork beadblasted to a matte finish. I can only hope my next .338 will shoot that well.

Well, I just got back from the range. I had stuck a plastic margerine container lid shim under the lug and a business card under the chamber to center the barrel and stiffen and center the berrel a bit better. I was shooting 3.5" groups....better, but still crappy! Then my wife phoned me and told me some of your guys' responses were to not clean the barrel, and it might tighten up. Well I'll be...it worked! After about 10 shots I was getting fairly consitent 1.5" groups. Thanks everyone, I was beginning to get really discouraged. Now it'll at least kill a deer at 200 yds, and I'm ordering a trigger for this puppy! And tomorrow, region three is open season for whitetail bucks and mulie 4+ points! :D

I prefer to leave some fouling in the barrel during the hunting season, then clean it well after. I've yet to have a rifle that needs to be clean to shoot, but have some that shoot well clean or fouled.

Will keeping the barrel dirty cause pitting though? I'm still learning, but I thought I've read that a few times. And what exactly causes pitting?

Pitting would be caused by moisture, and I wouldn't worry about it. Some guys use tape over their muzzle while in the field to keep dirt and moisture out. Hunt with it, then clean it.
