Looking for first hunting rifle!

I'm looking to buy a Tikka T3 SS Laminated stock. What prices should I be paying for a used one in good condition? 90% of the rifles (not just this specific rifle) I've seen online and on the EE have been really close to retail.

Do rifles just REALLY hold value or are the posters looking to be haggled with down to a fair price? thanks

That is one of the biggest complaints around here

Infact one of the standing jokes is "buy it for retail put it on EE + 10%"
 
For rifles that are still being manufactured, I'd tend to look at purchasing new, especially since a number of retailers have pretty good sales throughout the year (e.g., Remington 700 DMs for $399 a couple of months ago).

Good deals do appear on the EE for current production rifles, but you won't see them often unless you frequently check the EE --- they're listed and sold within hours or more often minutes.

Where the EE shines is in finding rifles that are no longer in production. In this case, if you really want one of the discontinued models, comparing against "retail" pricing is meaningless. Like with the newer models, the EE has some spectacular deals, but you have to check frequently and jump on them.

If this is your first rifle, I don't think you can go wrong buying new as there are lots of decent quality, affordable rifles currently for sale.

I think very few Tikkas have accuracy/performance problems. On the other hand, T3 Lites in larger chambering can have a nasty amount of recoil for the uninitiated, and have seen them for sale for that reason. I've bought rifles that are perfectly fine but didn't really get used and I ended up selling them in near new condition.
 
Wouldnt excessive recoil qualify as poor performance? I've owned several Tikka's over the years, and like any other rifle they have their fair share of lemons.
 
Yeah I thought about the weight / recoil issues. Thats why I'm staying .270 or 30.06 in laminated stock. the laminated would weigh more right? or similar to synthetic?

But thats probably a good combo which is why no one is selling :(
 
i'd echo going new if your buyinng a new gun factor in atleast 100 dollars for gunsmithing just incase. Alot of used guns wont need it but some will , and especially if your not a super keen eye when examining them
 
I bought a slightly used T3 SS laminated with a 3200 3x9 in .300winmag for $1000 4 years ago (came with case, sling, 3 boxes of ammo). 3 bears, a Moose and a Doe with it, Its my luckiest gun LOL

6.5x55, it's a lefty. It is fairly new, it is my first rifle purchase off the EE. Felt comfortable with buying used because the seller had a good trader rating and had bought and sold from prominent board members. I will post pics when I receive it, should be here tommorow! :dancingbanana: :dancingbanana:

Good choice to buy the LS model. I have two of them in 270WSM. My wife took over the first one so I bought another for me. LOVE THEM. I waited the extra year from 2004 to 2005 to get the LS model. I do not care for the T3 synthetic stock after owning Sako m75ss rifles, plus the Sako m75 Greywolf rifle wasnt goingto be released for another year.

You will enjoy the rifle for sure. If you are thinking 270, I'd recommend the 270WSM. Shoot 140gr Accubonds / TSX's or 150gr XP3's if you dont reload and you are good to go. I have taken elk, moose, bears, WT & mulies along with my wife at various distances. IMPRESSIVE caliber for sure.

Great shooters, silky smooth actions. One rifle has a silver Leupold scope, the other a matte black. The gunmetal grey Leupold looks good too as I have a couple on Sako Greywolf rifles.

Your choice for the Tikka is good. They are a good rifle for their value and popular with the hunting fraternity, however it is one of very few rifles built well today in that price range between $700-$900. Other rifles to consider are the yester year rifles such as the Mannlicher Schoenauer, Styer Mannlicher, Winchester, Remingtion, Krico, Mauser and such. These firearms hold their value because they were well made with time and thought. Many rifles today are mass produced and considered utilitarian. Becareful what you purchase.

Hard not to make a tack driver out of this chambering.

Nice score. My finger was itchy, like I said, it was my first EE rifle purchase. Live and learn. Plus I'm still happy, just maybe a little lighter in the wallet than you. :cool:
