Hi Folks,

I'm new to the forum. I'm in the process of planning a custom rifle project for this winter.

I plan to build a lightweight stainless synthetic .224 caliber centerfire.

I like the Savage model 16fcss as a starting point. I do not require button hole accuracy, but thats a bonus.

My goal is to drive heavy .224 hunting bullets such as the 75 gr scirocco, 75 gr Barnes TSX, or 80 and 90 grain VLD's as fast as possible. I want the most energy possible at 100 yards or less.

My current thoughts are a Savage 16 with detachable mag with a 26" sporter contour barrel, chambered in .22-250 Ackley Improved.

What are your thoughts as to twist rates, and barrel length for this project?

Yes, I know this thing is gonna eat barrels!!

welcome to the forum.

i'm in much the same boat.. want to build a fast twist 22 to take advantage of high bc bullets.. i will be mostly target shooting with mine though, being a 22 cal i'll be allowed to carry for ten months of the year. i think i'm leaning towards a 22-6mmai. You can get shilen barrels from a board member here.

good luck

here's a site with a great chart for figuring out rifle rates for bullet weights.

h ttp://www.riflebarrels.com/products/caliber_twist_rates.htm

for those heavy bullets your gonna need a pretty fast twist rate, between 1:9" and 1:7"

I've got a .223 AI w/ 22 " 1-8" # 3 Rock barrel that will shoot 62 TSX at 3150fps, and 75 amax at 3000+. I'm sure it'll shoot the 70 tsx and various 80's, though probably not the 90's, but there aren't really 90 gr hunting bullets out there, and that's what I build the rifle to do. It weighs 8lbs as you see it, minus the bipod. Standard fill macmilan classic, 3.5-10 leupold in talleys. It feels lighter, thanks to the balance.

The next one will be a Faux Ti build in .22-250 AI w/ a 1-8" mountain rifle contour barrel. Can't see doing a SAIMI .22-250, with the performance I get from the .223 AI w/ 10+gr less powder

Thanks for the quick replies.

I wonder if the 90 gr VLD's will even fit into a detachable mag? I like the 90's becuase with the .22-250 AI, I will be close to the energy of a .243

I wonder though, if it may be simpler to run the 75gr TSX or Scirocco a little faster.

Here is what I determined from the Berger Ballistic Program.

60 gr Partition Muzzle ---3700 fps ===== 1824 f/lbs

75 gr tsx Muzzle ---3500 fps ===== 2040 f/lbs

90 gr VLD Muzzle ---3300 fps ===== 2176 f/lbs

I have no idea how what kind of velocity I will be able to atain with the .22-250 AI with a 26" barrel. Does anyone have any experience?

If i could boost the velocity on the 75gr bullets to 3700 fps, we are talking 2280 f/lbs.

Remember, my goal is maximum energy, not barrel life, with decent accuracy.
