Can some one please show me or tell me the difference between the following:

S&W 686 6" BBL
S&W 686 6" FULL UNDER LUG BBL,

I just bought the S&W 686 6" FULL UNDER LUG BBL, used from ellwoods and need a holster for this gun but not sure if i should get the

SW686 L-Frame 6" - BBL
or
SW686 L-Frame stock 6" - BBL only

can some wheel gun guys out there help me please?

Full or half lug

S&W revolvers can have a full underlug--stock material runs under the barrel for the full length from the ejector rod housing to muzzle or half lug which stops just beyond the ejector rod housing. A google search will show you some pictures.

Cheers, Will

Is there any way of knowing what the differences between these two holsters are? It's impossible to make a recommendation given just the basic descriptions. Who is the manufacturer? FWIW, nearly all 686's had full lug barrels.

I don't think there is such a beast as a 686 with a 6" barrel that doesn't have a full underlug. The only 686 barrels I can think of that don't have a full underlug are a 4" Mountain Gun and a 5" barrel with a removable light rail.

I think you may be right--the S&W forum has a thread that mentions 4" and 5" half-lug models here.

I had forgotten about the regular 5" half-lug barrel. Make that a third 686 variation without a full underlug. It's too bad that they don't make that one a regular production item.

OK...I'll preface my comments by saying that I don't know these holsters at all--I just looked up the model name on Safariland's website here. So it looks like there are two models, one meant for large-diameter custom barrels (up to 1 inch) and another meant for the regular barrel. So, for the two the OP has listed I would pick the one called "SW686 L-Frame stock 6" - BBL only". Again, I'm not an expert and would encourage the OP to have a look at the Safariland site.

That holster is made for regular (stock) 686's (Factory underlug and barrel contour) and PPC/Bianchi revolvers (686 Full or Heavy underlug or slab side without underlug) if your gun is a custom revolver with a gunsmith added flat sided barrel, or heavy bull barrel, with or without full length weight. If your 686 is stock you don't need the under lugged holster.
