Thanks guys.

Do you just want a .22lr to get your feet wet or are you also looking for a center fire rifle for big game hunting?

As a .22 I would look at the CZ 452/455 series. They are bolt action and high quality. They run ~ $600. Depending on you budget you can go higher or lower than that. Let us know.

As for centerfire rifles for big game hunting, we need to know more. Where do you want to hunt (terrain, is it wide open or lots of thick bush?), what do you want to hunt (deer, varmints, moose?) What is your budget? Not expensive could mean a $10 000 Merkel instead of a $60 000 H&H, or it could mean a $150 bubba'd Enfield.

To be perfectly honest, your going to get dozens of opinions. There are a plethora of threads already started on this subject. Might be helpful to go through the General Firearms Discussion forum and look for similar questions and answers. Your question is similar to "what's the best car?" (Aston Martin DB9 btw ;))
You need to be more specific as to what you require e.g:
What are you going to hunt
Where are you going to hunt
Are there any calibre restrictions where your going to hunt
Have you shot any centrefire rifles before
What is you frame size, do you need a shorter/longer LOP
Can you use open sights, or do you need a riflescope
Are you able to practice with the rifle
What's your budget

As per the 22 question. Instructors will nearly always suggest starting out with a bolt action 22, then you can build from there. Lots of inexpensive options out there

Some excellent calibre choices for new hunters whom want to hunt larger game (deer, black bear, etc) would include 6.5's, 243's, 7mm's (non magnum). If you've shot centrefire firearms before then 308, 30/06 are good alternatives as well.

Buy a Browning .22 for your son. He will be able to give it to his grandson. In my case I have a Browning auto-22 that was passed on to me and that I plan to give to my grandson when he is old enough for it.
