Hey Gunnutz I need ideas on customising a rifle for a good friend of mine who has lost all his fingers on both hands and only has partial thumbs. I don't have a big budget to work with but I do have access to a machine shop . I am thinking bolt action 8mm mauser or P17. Any ideas on eletronic triger and Safety?
Thanks
Robert

Look into the trigger system of a M6 Survival rifle? I don't know if you could use it with no fingers or not.

I would suggest leather 'gloves' attatched to the stock. A leather glove on the forearm that he can grip with his thumb, but friction will hold that in place. Another glove on the right side of the pistol grip with a hammer extension style adaptor on the trigger protruding from the right side that can be used with his other thumb. In effect the rifle will be hanging in place. Keep the rifle to a light caliber, say a .243 so it won't fly around too much. Good luck and good on you for helping him out.

This would be fairly simple in warm weather, I think.

The problem would only really begin when conditions were colder and gloves and mitts became a necessity. He's not going to want to take any chances on ever getting cold hands again.

I'm thinking:

something like

and a winter trigger modification, like

or, more likely, something like this

this would be one to look into! seems like he could use the side palm of his hand to use the trigger.

Good luck and Thanks for helping out a brother! :)

I once read an article about a similar scenario. The gun was a 308 and the butt was altered with a rubber dipped swivel attached to a special hunting coat. The gun hung from the swivel at the shoulder making it possible to raise it into shooting position, with one hand. The person who owned this gun lost them to frostbite. The trigger guard was widened so the shooter could put the knuckle of the missing index finger on the trigger. The bolt was extended, so it could be palmed into action.
That’s all I can remember from the article, that I read 20 years ago.
Hope this helps.

If he has his thumb, just clip an L shaped piece of metal on a pivot to the front of the trigger quard, with a piece of rod or something to act as a "finger". Press down with your thumb, gun goes boom.

Think SKS safety lever basically.

Robert, I moved your thread to the Hunting and Sporting Arms section of the board. It might help in your search.

Good on ya for trying to help out your friend and good luck
