Hi everyone, I need some info on this 3gun/2gun madness. Please be gentle I'm a newbie.
I've seen some videos and it looks like something I'd be very interested in trying out. But I would sure love some more information on this
What does it mean?
I imagine 3 gun means: pistol, semi auto rifle, shotgun. 2 gun means semi auto rifle and pistol? Is there a limitation on the specific type of rifle, pistol, shotgun? Service rifle? National match rifle?
Training:
Also am I required to have a black badge certification to tryout? Do I need to take an action carbine class? Are there training classes offered tailored for 2gun/3gun competitions?
Gear:
What gear am I required to have? Holster? Vest? Belt? Gloves? Boots? The gear should hold how many mags, is there a minimum/maximum number of rifle mags, pistol mags, shotgun shells to be worn on the person? I assume the rifle needs a sling, what type of sling? 2 point? single point?
Sights:
Are holographic sights allowed, are magnification sights allowed, lasers allowed, or is it just iron sights?
Mags:
For the rifle is there a limitation on mags? Meaning can I use my new brunswick 14 round mags or just 5 round mags? Pistol, I assume it's 10 rounds, but could you use a .40 mag in a 9mm and squeeze in a few more rounds?
Eyes and ears:
Hearing protection, is it required to have those fancy electronic ear muffs or are ear plugs enough. What type of eye protection is required? I usually just shoot with my regular seeing glasses, is it required to be wearing safety glasses?
Locales:
Where are competitions held? Is it popular in lower mainland BC?
Duration:
How long does one competition last. 8 hours? 2 days? 3 days?

Hey

As you guessed 3 gun is what it sounds. The use of 3 guns to complete various stages. Some stages require 1,2 or all 3 systems to complete. Most people use a AR type rifle 12g shotgun and semi auto pistol.

The club I shoot at does not require any training but that may very. See what you can find in your area. Black badge is a great starting point and I would highly recommend it. I have yet to find training that is 3 gun specific. The best advice to is to get out and practice, shooting weak hand etc. loading drills is also great practice as this can make or break a stage.

As far as gear the sky is the limit and you will see everything. If possible head to a match and see what people are using. No two people will have the same setup. Basic I would say holster, at least 4 pistol mag holders, ar mag pouches number depending what mags you run. Last a method of storing and loading shotgun shells. AP custom shell caddys as example. People use dump bags pockets and everything else. After a match you will make changes till you get your own load out the way you like it. I myself load and store everything on a belt. Others may use a chest rig.

Optics are another choice to make. Depending on your choice may put you in different classes. A magnification scope will put you into open class in my club. Any electronic optic on pistol is open class as well. I fancy a red dot myself

Matches at my club are normally held over a day. With setup and take down 8-5 is the norm. We do hold two day events and those rock.

Hope some of this helps

Like heavenisAlie suggested, your best bet is to come out to a match and watch, talk, and learn. I was fortunate to have some great guys at EESA actually host an intro-to-3gun course but those types of events seem to pretty rare around here.

If you drop in at a match you will see what kind of gear guys and gals are running and learn about the different divisions. Wrt scopes, magnification, magazine sizes, bipods, red dots, etc. you can use anything that is legal to be used in Canada but it can impact what division you compete in. In the multigun events in my area, the majority of shooters don't worry to much about their division, they just want a chance to get out and play with their toys! The point being, don't pick your gear based on what division you want to shoot in, pick the gear you like to play with and then see what division that puts you in. The 3 main divisions are iron sights, tac optics, and open.

The only other suggestion I can give you is to get involved! Everyone wants to shoot multigun events but few want to go to the trouble of putting on matches or assisting in the setup and teardown. Be the kind of shooter that is eager to learn, shoot, AND lend a hand.

if you can make it out to abbotsford on saturday, there is a 3 gun match and people there should be able to answer all your questions (or you will see the answers to your questions)

Yah I saw that, wife was interested incoming along as well, she's interested in staring some ipsc, so maybe we'll take a black badge course together. But unfortunately tomorrow we're doing some other hobbies.

Hi everyone, I need some info on this 3gun/2gun madness. Please be gentle I'm a newbie.
I've seen some videos and it looks like something I'd be very interested in trying out. But I would sure love some more information on this
What does it mean? You are correct by assuming that 3 gun is pistol, rifle, and shotgun. Not sure about the 2 gun. Always go to the source for correct information, don't rely on folks here or anywhere. IPSC Ontario is a good sight explaining all of these things. Google it.
I imagine 3 gun means: pistol, semi auto rifle, shotgun. 2 gun means semi auto rifle and pistol? Is there a limitation on the specific type of rifle, pistol, shotgun? Service rifle? National match rifle?
Training: IPSC black badge covers pistol only, holster practice and some shooting. Contact Alex Szakas here
ipscalex@gmail.com. He has a plethora of info about IPSC as he used to be a top of the breed instructor in Hamilton, ON.

Also am I required to have a black badge certification to tryout? Do I need to take an action carbine class? Are there training classes offered tailored for 2gun/3gun competitions?
Gear: For the Black Badge course, you need a production division pistol (Google IPSC production division list - your gun must be in the list), at least 5 mags (more is better) and about 500 rounds of ammo of your choice, holster, belt, mag pouches.
Sights: IPSC has several divisions. Your Black Badge course will be done using your production division gun. Once you get your black badge, you can go to a different number of divisions (Google IPSC divisions). Open is the only Division allowing holographic sights. For everything else, iron sights.
Are holographic sights allowed, are magnification sights allowed, lasers allowed, or is it just iron sights?
Mags: Can't comment about rifle as I don't shoot it in IPSC.
For the rifle is there a limitation on mags? Meaning can I use my new brunswick 14 round mags or just 5 round mags? Pistol, I assume it's 10 rounds, but could you use a .40 mag in a 9mm and squeeze in a few more rounds?
Eyes and ears: If you own a handgun, then you belong to a club, then you know that eyes and ears are required by any club. Since IPSC is conducted on the grounds of a club, they require you to abide by the law of the club you're in. It's for your own safety as without ears, you'll be deaf by the end of the match or hearing impaired. Electronic ear muffs are not fancy, they can be had for mere $80 and are good as you can hear range commands and all harmful sounds above 80db are blocked. Eyes of your choosing. I just wear my prescription glasses.
Hearing protection, is it required to have those fancy electronic ear muffs or are ear plugs enough. What type of eye protection is required? I usually just shoot with my regular seeing glasses, is it required to be wearing safety glasses?
Locales: When you become a member, you will have access to IPSC Ontario site that lists the calendar of all the events. They are held on gun clubs' grounds.
Where are competitions held? Is it popular in lower mainland BC?
Duration: Level 1 and 2 matches last 2-3 hours, depending on how ineffective are the organizers. Level 3 and 4 matches can last all day to a few days.
How long does one competition last. 8 hours? 2 days? 3 days?

Ss1980:
The OP is from Vancouver so the contact info for Ontario will do him limited good.
You have given him a wealth of information concerning IPSC but he was clearly asking for info on 3 gun and 2 gun. iPSC Ontario website will not give him any info on shooting 3 gun as it does not exist in IPSC.
You stated "don't rely on folks here or anywhere" which is a pile of crap. There is a wealth of correct info on here you just can't take everything as gospel. Double check everything.

Mikethebike:
Try to make it to one of the matches at Abbotsford. At the very least pm heavenIsAlie and I am sure he can provide you with some additional information or steer you in the right direction. I hope this helps.

Hey, I'm glad ss1980 necro'd this thread, got to watch a cool video of a local 3gun comp in the thread that was linked to :D haha
