Need Info on .243 vs 25-06 vs 270

So by caliber they must mean the bore diameter, not the groove diameter?
Yes. Caliber is measured land to land.

The wording of the regulation is.

The holder of a small game licence may not use a rifle of
greater calibre than .275, except a flintlock or percussion
cap muzzle-loading gun, for hunting small game in the
counties of Brant, Elgin, Essex, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex,
Northumberland, Oxford, Perth and Wellington and
the regional municipalities of Chatham/Kent, Durham,
Haldimand-Norfolk, Halton, Hamilton-Wentworth,
Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and York and the City of Toronto

Panchito,
I can't find in the regulations where you can't hunt with a 300 or bigger? The gal on the phone said you could shoot deer with an elephant gun as long as it's a centre fire rifle area & season

Can someone show this in the regs???

I had the exact same problem - can 1 gun do it all and stay legal in SW Ontario???

My short list came down to 25-06 (as I wasn't prepared to reload a 257 wby mag), the 6.5x55, and then the .270 wsm and win.

After doing a lot of reading, talking to people, and flopping back and forth like a dying fish... I settled on the .270 win

My runner up was the 6.5x55 swede, although the 25-06 was closely behind.

To be honest I think you could flip a coin and you would be satisfied with your answer.... Then you'll have to decide on rifle action/manufacturer/scope/mounts............

Good luck to you!!

Thankyou all for your suggestions, I think I will settle for the 25-06 and go from there, worst case I have to buy a bigger gun if I feel that 25-06 is not big enough. Like it was said, good excuse to buy 2 guns!!!

thanks

Panchito

I'm in a similar situation - looking for a-nother rifle that I can use in S. Ont. (for ground hogs, coyotes etc.) AND could also hunt deer with (in a rifle area - Bow, ML, and Shotgun here). I'm looking for something that's ballistically better than any 22 CF. So, I'm leaning towards 243 - I'd like to keep it to short action. The 260 and 6.5 are great suggestions also!

It's great you have selected a cartridge in the 25-06.

If I were going to choose an '06 variant, I'd take the 270 (both are necked down 30-06 cases). A small 25 cal tube will burn-out faster than a .277 hole will. Also, you get a better BC with 270 bullets.

Anyway, just my 2-cents. As was said earlier, it's probably a close coin-toss between the two!

Now the fun part begins - that's deciding on the actual rifle....then optics.....

Best Luck!!!!! SD

IMHO...you're 3 choices will work for Moose, Bear and Elk if everything works out just right, but we all no it never does.....Elmer Keith said" he would trade velocity for bullet weight/dia. anytime". so, if on a budget I'd go .308 or 30/06, better still .350 Mag. or .35 Whelen, best of all 45/70. i consider the .243 and 25/06 as deer rifles at most and the .270 O.K. for the bigger stuff.

Panchito, go get yourself a .243 for the long range varmints/yotes, you've already got a 17hmr for the closer/smaller stuff. When you get to hunting moose or what have you, splurge and get a 308win or a 300mag or even better, a 45-70. EVERYONE "needs" another gun!:D
