Need Info on 43 Mauser Bullet

Make sure that you slug the bore before you order a mold. Most model 71s have a bore (groove diameter I mean) around .451 or .452, while the 71/84 is the .446. With black powder loads and soft bullets they will "bump up" and fill the larger bore reasonably well. Smokeless loads not so much. Have fun....Catnip.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of the differences in bore (groove) size in the 71 and 71/84.

The bore size is not consistant in my model 71's. I have measured five and they vary from .446 to .454. However with my rifles I can't chamber a round using a bullet larger than .448. The throat of the chamber must be restricted? I am going to find some cerrosafe and do a cast one day.

What he said. My K-71 slugs out at .4515"

I need to order a mold but I want to double check the bullet dimensions - need your help.

For you guys that have loaded 43 mauser ammo and /or bullets: Pics would be nice, and the measurement of the bullet and the COAL would be very helpful.

:) Thanks Smellie for the info you PMed. :)

I'll have to go downstairs tomorrow and dig some out.

Mine are Lee 405 grain .459" hollow bases sized down. Been running my converted 45-90 cases for years and years and years.

Not sure if my measurements are of any use to you but I will say my hand loads are very very accurate even though they are very custom lol.

You don't have a problem with lube grooves when you size down from .459" to .446"?

I size my 43 mauser bullets to .447, i like to be a bit over the bore size with cast bullets so they have a good fit. i also use .314 in my lee enfields, if it was jacketed, is say use the bore size. But .001-.002 over bore size is fine and helps stop leading, although im sure you know all this, you seem to be the cast bullet guy.

I used a LEE .445" HB minie in my 11mms , Mauser, Gras , Mannlicher, Murata. Shortened the base plug which left a shallow HB.

Found the case mouth on M71 and M84 Mauser would not take a bullet over .446" after firing.

100% agree. The deciding factor is the chamber - the fattest cast bullet you can chamber will usually shoot the best. I've shot .004" oversize cast bullets in several firearms.

No they are plenty deep.

I'll add that I get about 2.5 moa with them and zero leading. They shoot very very well.

That mold only cost me like $35 brand new. I made the sizer by opening up a Lee .439" push though sizer. Took about an hour to get it just right.

It all came about during a rainy day here and I really wanted to shoot my 71/84 so I got to work making a sizer.

Smellie thought it was a bit crazy sizing down bullets that much but honestly they go through with very little trouble.

Been doing it that way for many years..probably have loaded and shot a good 500 43 mauser cartridges in the last 3 years.

Well it took a while, but I have a mold ordered. It is a .447" 385gr, similar to the RCBS 44-370-FN bullet.

I'll take a guess that those bullets will shoot very well in motion if not all Mausers you feed them to.

My my home made .447" 405 grain bullets hold about 2.5 moa in my own rifle and they have shot very well in the couple other I fed them to.

I got a 1871 Mauser coming this way, need to learn about the bullets. I'll probabaly get a mold if I can't find proper bullets.

Is 385gr 0.446" about right? Any suggestions for a mold source?

Most 71s slug out about .451" plus or minus, usually plus. 71/84s usually slug out at .446". If you are using soft lead and black powder, mit shouldn't be an issue to use .446" bullets as the powder charge will bump them up in the bore. If you are using smokeless and medium or hard cast bullets, you will most likely find better accuracy in a '71 with .451" or .452" bullets.

It's funny you mention that as I settled on a 405 hollow base as my mold for this caliber. I'm using 4198 powder in my loads which probably bumps them up some.

Smokeless powder will bump up the bullets too, depending on your powder and how much you're using. The trick is to have a soft bullet and a "stout" load. 2400 powder works well for this, and some others as well.

Let me just dust off this thread. Through a trade I will soon become the owner of a 71/84.
I’ve been researching reloading information and have found this thread very helpful. The guy whom I’m getting the rifle from said he’s shot his using 20grns of 4198 smokeless powder. I trust him but was looking a second opinion before I start loading.
Also has anyone used the 43 Mauser cast bullets from Jetbullets.com?

Thanks, Ed

Yes to Jetbullets. He’s a good guy. Met him in person to pick up my .43 Mauser bullets. He might even be on this very thread... ;)

I suppose you are talking about IMR4198

If yes, 20grs is wayyyyyy too weak, start with 28grs (if your rifle is in top shape only) and stop at 32grs, I believe 35grs is close to maximum, but there is nothing to gain to go there.
