Hi couple years ago I did a deal for a 686 the guy told me it was a 686 Target model its in a satin finish the front sight is adjustable like the ppc gun front sights are ?. Can any one tell me about the history this 686 what year smith might of made this model .

The adjustable fronts were available on 6" and 8 3/8" 586/686/629s' and the 10.5" model 29 Silhouette models. It allowed you to set your sights for 4 different ranges like used in Silhouette shooting.

That front sight option was first available in 1986 on those models. I think that S&W dropped the option in the late 1990's (1997-1998 if I'm not mistaken).

the one I have is 6 inch barrel is there anything else that's not on standard 686 like trigger or hammer is there any value in price on these compared to just a 686

They are exactly the same except the 4 positions adj. front sight. The book says that there's a premium (10-15%) for this model.

The book may say they carry a premium but my experience is that in most cases they will not sell for as much as the normal guns do.

Just my experience.

I suspect you are right graydog. The S&W catalog of course refers to the US market when it comes to values and desirability. I've found their market is very different to ours when it comes to values, premiums for certain guns etc etc. Some guns seem to be worth more here and some quite a bit less.

OP....if you want to post the first few digits of the SN I would look up the date for you.
