Tracker,

Funny as I was recently in your shoes, knew IPSC existed, had a faint idea as to what it was, no idea if it was a local thing or only happened in central and western canada.

Last week I took my Black Badge in Dartmouth Nova Scotia, the three instructors were the three top IPSC shooters in NS, maybe even top 3 in Eastern Canada.

Turns out, the range, local firearms dealers and shooting community is made up of a great deal of experienced and proven IPSC shooters, competing in Canadian National matches, and matches in the states and overseas.

1) Freedom Ventures is a dealer at the top of this page, contact Sean Hansen - Owner / Operator / Major player in the Canadian IPSC scene.

2) Just had a course, next one hopefully before the summer, it depends on numbers requesting testing I believe.

3) No, you must have your resticted and own a CENTER FIRE pistol, 9mm at least.

4) You might be able to use the SKS in 3 gun matches, (pistol, shotgun and rifle) I'm not super sure on that one.

5) Black badge is 120.00 (which is a steal when you think about he caliber of the instructors and knowledge you learn) plus about 400 rounds to do the couse, total cost, 200.00 or so, plus pizza and coffee money!

PS, there is an IPSC match this weekend, at the dartmouth AMA range.

Good luck, welcome aboard.

Email me your email address, I'll let you know as soon as the next one get scheduled. We jsut finished one last weekend. Probably May. Depends on # of people waiting.

No, sorry. We've done too many people who didn't have thier own gun and were just borrowing that never ended up getting a gun. We do the course to get more people to come play our game with us, not to train better shooters. Besides, you can't practice for the course or train during the downtime of the course, or practice to finish the make ups if you don't have a gun.

In 3 Gun, yes. In NS, 3-Gun matches are once a year, there are 20 pistol matches.

$20.

hey,
thanks guys for the quick answers.

i was out at the great Vahala Gun shop (sorry for the spelling) and it seems like there is alot of comp. style shooting going on there. i was talking to someone there (not staff) and she said there was shooting i could do with a center fire (not my Ruger 10/22). some type of action shooting- i belive she said it had to do with shooting steel plates.
-what type of shooting is this??

-is there other types comp. shooting i can do with my ruger or sks besides bench?? action??? keeping in mind i don't have a pistol or my Restricted card.

thanks for all you help. i'm very greatfull to find like-minded people who love to shoot, teach, and share the sport. :D

shoot straight, and have some good clean fun!!!

Dunno what she was referring to, sorry. Probably something the guys there have dreamed up - which guarantees a good time.
Over to others for action rifle suggestions...

Wait a minute,

Tracker Trapper, You're the guy I met at the Army Navy Store in Halifax arn't you... into geocaching and shot a Ruger 10/22 and SKS, yep thats you.

Sorry I didn't get a hold of you, lost your number.

Yeah, if you would like some help obtaining your restricted licence, I will help you. I have the book you need, and can help you with the laws regarding, transporting, storing and shooting restricteds.

I'll walk you through what challanging you test and what to expect.

Then, the upgrade from Non - Res to restriced can be done (which is pretty quick) and you get contact Freedom Ventures for nice new IPSC pistol.

It simply has not caught on as much as pistol. You need a lot more real estate to do it over pistol. We're still trying though - as I said, we have one a year - but it's no where near the turnout that the pistol matches get. That could all change if someone like you who is big on IPSC rifle gets in the organization.

That is a steal. I payed more than double that and didn't recieve any pizza.

ok,ok. i think you have my interest now!! i would be more than willing to put the time in on such a project. it sounds like a project i could put my heart and soul in.

1) could i still help to organize/ compete even though i don't have my black badge (or does that not apply for rifles?)

2) are you the right person to talk to about bringing this to the next level? (if so- what is the best way to coraspond- maybe a face to face or phone call?)

ps- my girl friend says i only talk about 2 things- her and guns!!! (you know, she right!!):bigHug:

IPSC NB may have some level 2 handgun with a rifle side match this summer on top of the provincial 3-gun/2-gun match. I know of two or three clubs that have discussed it. This is the norm in some US matches. The only thing is that only one rifle category may be used (Open). This is all tentative, but has been rumored:sniper: :sniper:

are you saying your the man i should talk to about this or are you interested in helping to set up??? or just competeing?

Baby steps brother,

It's great you're interested in IPSC and the long arms aspect of it, however lets work on getting you your restricted licence and Black Badge course well before we start thinking long term... Contact Akerley Campus for the Restricted test.

How do you eat an elephant?

One bite at at time.

you should get your restricted license. Then get the Black Badge. Then you can show up at any IPSC match in Atlantic Canada and compete in a scheduled IPSC rifle match (or handgun or shotgun) I am fairly new to setting up stages and matches, so no, I am not the guy to go to. However, you can look up the match schedule for IPSC NB or IPSC NS on their websites and check for updates.

thanks folks,

i was hoping that i would not have to get the course to compete in rifle, but it doesn't look that way. it does seem like there is some intrest in a rifle comp though.
thanks for you advice and help. i hope maybe this might inspire some one a little!!

i can wait to go shoot with all of you.

IPSC rifle is a BLAST!!

EESA in Ontario holds a 3 gun match once a year with our next one running at the end of May.

I am thinking about hosting a few level 1 IPSC rifle/shotgun matches later in the year just for the hell of it.

This thread raises an interesting question. Perhaps there would be some merit to somehow allowing people to complete in IPSC shotgun and IPSC rifle matches without having to get a restricted licence. Tracker-trap is probably not the only rifle owner in Canada who'd like to shoot IPSC competitions, without bothering to get into handgunning (at least not yet).

For example, there could be a "Grey Badge" (or whatever) that covered all the basic IPSC rules and procedures, but used a rifle and/or shotgun for the practical portion instead of a handgun. People who completed this course would then be qualified to shoot rifle and shotgun matches, but not handgun matches. There could also be an upgrade course if they were to later chose to move into handgun (or they could simply be required to take the entire existing Black Badge course).

IPSC is primarily a handgun sport in this country, and that's certainly where the history is, but the latest set of international rules treats all three gun types pretty-much equally. Perhaps our training program needs to start moving in that direction. It might encourage growth in the sport.
