Hi,

I read a lot on hunting in Europe and came upon some info regarding the introduction of European Hare in Ontario. I ckhecked the province's hunting regulation and there's a season for them....GREAT!

If there's anyone who hunts them reading this , I'd like to have info on technique, habitat and range. I live near Montreal but I have good friends in Hamilton. I'd like to eventually (maybe fall 2006?)make a hunting trip to try and bag a european hare or two.

I plan on prospecting in the Hamilton area (summer 2006?) and asking owner's permissions to hunt their land.

Any info one can give me is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Yann

We call them Jack rabbits... Typically hunted with hounds or by walking fencelines in the winter. The numbers are very sketchy in many areas... finding a huntable population may be harder than you think.
The great horned Jackalope is also a much sought after trophy...

Thank's BigRed!

I already have a Jackalope's head on the wall (honest) :)

Talked to a guy in S-W ontarionand he manages to catch some with his beagles. Thehy seem common by area. Guess I'll have to wait 100years for them to start crossing over to Quebec (like the deer did).

Good Hunting to you

If you can find an area with orchards, you will find tons of jacks. Getting permission maybe harder than finding an area with jacks.

Last year an average day for us, (6-8 in a group with 3 hounds) was probably 5 jacks.

Although this year during the deer seasons I have seen very few tracks and and a lot less rabbits than I did by this time last year.

The last few years we have organized a trip into Grey county, up near Hanover, there seemed to be an increase in Jack populations up there. I am from Waterloo and the numbers in that area are very low, the cottontail is the only bunny we find on a normal trip. If you get a chance to hunt them, try to use a rifle and hit them before they start running in the fields of fence lines, if you have multiple people post like deer hunting and have your buddy walk the fence line towards you. Shotguns work, but use full choke and heavy #2 loads, less will kill them but they get to that 30 yard mark in a hurry.

Good luck
