Hello all, my cousin is in the PPLI. He keeps ranting about how fun his rifle is to shoot. I know nothing about mil spec rifles or the civilian equivalents. What should I be looking for in regards to a semi .223/5.56mm rifle? What are some good brands/models? Anything I should shy away from? I would likely shoot this rifle ALOT. Probably milsurp ammo. Is that the norm? What sort of maintanence should I expect owning a rifle like this? I am very familiar with semi pistols (disassembly and cleaning). Is there any other major differences between cleaning and regular care? Sorry this is a lot to ask, but I am very curious, but know nothing. Thanks for your patience and responses. I don't need really technical answers right now as I am just trying to decide if I should get involved in this avenue of shooting. It's the only one I haven't tried so I figure why not see right? Thanks again

There's more AR variants around than you can shake a stick at. Everyone has a favorite but the most popular seem to be Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt, LMT and Stag. Do some searching in this forum and you'll see all your questions answered.

I'm assuming you know, but the AR platform and all variants are restricted in Canada so it's a range only item. If you want to shoot outside the range you'll need to look at one of the other semi-auto .223's on the market.

dtkb,
There's lots of info on this site about black rifles. I highly recommend doing as much research as posible before buying a rifle.

It's a very personal choice. Colt, LMT, and Stag seem to be the three most popular choices. However RRA, DPMS, Armalite etc are considered pretty good second tier rifles. Just avoid the Oly and you're good.

You'll have to decide what type of shooting you plan on doing. If you're looking for CQB, service rifle matches, bench target shooting etc. The type of rifle you pick should match the type of shooting you plan on doing.

Oh and don't think you'll be happy with just one rifle :D. I used to tell myself that, but I was only kidding myself.

All good advice thus far, you'll also need to decide if you want a C7 type clone like your cousin uses at "work" or if you want a flattop, M4 style or shorty. Since all ARs are restricted, the sky is pretty much the limit on barrel length. Uber short 7.5" or right out to 24-26" heavy bbl varmint/target guns.
