At the Perth Gun Show yesterday, I agreed to take an older Remington semi-auto as a part trade. It looks a lot like the old Browning Auto 5, same kind of humpback receiver, massive fore-stock, barrel is 12 ga, chamber 2 3/4", and the gun is affixed with a Cutts Compensator. I do not see a model number anywhere on the gun, but the bolt is engraved with the words "THE SPORTSMAN"

It appears to function just fine, but I have not yet test-fired it. I seem to recall that the Cutts Compensator reduces recoil, but if I remember correctly, the blast is magnified. (This is an OLD memory, and may not be accurate.)

Any information out there on this model? I have a reasonable idea of value (as in not much) but would like to know a bit more about the old gal.

Thanks for any information you can offer.

Look up remington model 11. It is the same shotgun. The sportsman had its magazine limited to 2 rounds while the model 11 was a 4 shot mag. google the model and read its history it is an interesting story of John Moses Browning and the history of the Auto 5.

That is indeed some interesting reading.

I see that the USAF used the Model 11 with Cutts Compensator to train air gunners in WW II. Hmm, I wonder if what I have is an old USAF trainer gun? If it could talk, I reckon it would have many tales to tell!

The Sportsman would not have been a trainer due to mag capacity. Interesting history none the less.

Yes I thought of that later. Reading up on the net about people's experience with these, I guess this shotgun model, with the Cutts Compensator, was queen of the skeet fields for a number of years. I think I might ask a buddy who shoots skeet to take this one for a test drive.
