Hi everyone, I recently found this rifle and I would want to know more about it, I've been told it was made in 1898 according to the serial number. It's in caliber 38-55 and I would say that it's in 60 to 70% conditions, could be more... Does anyone know about the value of this rifle or any other important things ?

Here's some pictures

The buttstock looks like a replacement, and I suspect somebody's altered the tang and lever to a semi-pistol grip. It's difficult to tell from the photo, but the buttplate looks plastic, which is not period correct.

It was originally a saddle-ring carbine, so the magazine may have been shortened. Check the barrel forward of the front sight and see if there is any sign that a barrel band was once attached there.

The wood looks refinished, and there is no original finish left on the action. Unless I'm wrong about the buttstock and refinish, it would fetch about $350-400 tops.

that is an odd duck, have no idea if it all original.

It is not in original condition that's for sure.

The OP should explain what he is looking for in an 1894. I can see a few flaws with it, especially for someone looking for a collector. Might be a great shooter though and that might be all the OP needs and wants.

Tell us what you are looking for in a 94 and it will greatly help with an evaluation. Just don't pay too much for it if you are going to buy...

Pretty much what I could pick out from the pics.

Worth looking into further. Looks like a saddle ring carbine with 2/3 magazine and pistol grip. Winchester would build a rifle in just about any configuration at that time if the customer was willing to pay. It's worth consulting the Cody Firearms Museum to see what configuration it left the factory in, saddle ring carbines with factory pistol grips are rare. Even though the original finish is gone rarity trumps condition and it would be worth a fair bit more than a standard well used saddle ring carbine.

Configuration appears correct to me, except the buttstock looks badly sanded in the pics, or maybe just photos make it look that way at the lower tang. 2/3 mag looks correct, as does Plain Pistol Grip (PPG) buttstock with hard rubber shotgun buttplate. But, someone did add those sling eyes. If you like, I can run the serial for you with Cody, no charge. I still have a couple searches to use before mine expires. Just PM details if you want, and that could confirm the features of the gun for you.
Cheers,
Matt

As discussed, here is the info I got back from Cody for you :) :

WINCHESTER MODEL 1894 - SERIAL NUMBER 122027
Serial number applied on August 30, 1901
Type: Carbine
Caliber: 38/55
Plain checkered stock, pistol grip
2/3 Magazine
Shotgun butt, rubber butt plate
Received in warehouse on September 27, 1901
Shipped from warehouse on October 01, 1901, Order number 111230

According to this info, the 2/3 mag, SGB and plain pistol grip (PPG) are correct, but says it was also checkered. If it was checkered that would make it a semi deluxe carbine, pretty darn scarce, but it so, then it was badly sanded. It does look sanded in the photos, I guess you will know more when you actually get your hands on it and report back. Keep us posted!
Glad I could help out.
Matt

Nice old piece ! Looks like the checkering got worn over the years and "Bubba" sanded it off and re-varnished it.

Might be a good project to restore it ... real collectors value is already gone.
