Dear nutz,

Have not posted much lately – I’ve moved to the UK! I’m here for two years without guns. But they can’t stop me from dreaming about them. So this thread is about the guns that are on my mind with the goal of settling on what few purchases I might make for when I get to come home, and so I’ll have new toys to play with on my visits home. Now I’m just out of my Ph.D., and the cost of living here is pretty high, so despite the unlimited dreaming there’s a limited budget. It’s not a strictly set budget – but a new gun per year is about where I’m at.

My main interest is in big game hunting rifles, but I hunt small game and birds too. Somehow it seems important to me to hunt big game with nice guns, but for small things it is somehow more acceptable to use guns that are just good tools. Right now the core part of the collection is:

1. Savage Mark II .22lr – simple gun, quite accurate
2. Remington 870 12ga with 3” chamber, 26” barrel and a collection of chokes including turkey
3. Ruger No 1 K-Hornet
4. Remington 725 in .30-06, stock refinished to what I think is called a satin finish
5. Savage 99 in .358 Win

(plus another .22 that I'll unload soon, a near complete cap-lock muzzle loader from a kit, and a Mosin)

If I jump through all the hoops and buy anything while in the UK, or if I stay longer, it'll probably be a .223 because that type of thing is all that's of use for the types of critters that common folk are relegated to shooting here. Or maybe it'd be a .243 with a 26" barrel so it'd complement the K-hornet if I managed to figure out how to bring it home. I'll leave this topic alone now as it's a thread unto itself.

So you can see what I mean by being drawn to nice centerfires, and the rimfires and shotguns being just good basic field guns (at least for now). List two is the guns or type of guns that I’m finding myself thinking about, number of stars indicates interest level:

1. **Some kind of upland shotgun, ideally a 16 ga. SxS, maybe IGA/Stoeger Uplander
2. *17 HMR semi-auto of some kind. My cousin had one of the nicer model 597’s that cycled well and shot really well. Not sure that this combination is still available.
3. ****Some kind of very accurate centerfire in come kind of 6.5mm cartridge. Either 260 Rem, 6.5x55, or 6.5-06. Or maybe a 25-06 with the idea of ultimately changing the barrel.
4. ***Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan .416 Ruger

The 6.5 is the one that interests me the most and the one that I’m least settled on details-wise. I’d like it to come in around 8lbs scoped (probably with a 4-12x40 Leupold VXII). I’d like a 24” barrel, especially if it’s to be an -06 cartridge. I’ve thought a lot about Savages, but fit and finish is important to me – perhaps I need to be educated about aftermarket stocks, etc?

Don’t tell me that the Hawkeye would be more sensible for a Canadian if in .375. I know that.

List #3 is for my wife. I might live vicariously through her. She currently has a Stoeger Condor 20 ga O/U and a crudely converted Swedish Mauser. She could use a lighter gun for still-hunting whitetails. And she dreams about someday hunting great bears, but is on blood thinners so bruising from recoil is a consideration. She has little interest in anything that’s not a bolt action. So her list is:

1. Ruger Hawkeye compact in 7mm-08
2. 35 Whelen, or some such low-end big bear gun (will serve as moose gun too), make and model still open but she sure likes the looks of Ruger M77s

Any thoughts on these potential purchases will be welcome!!!

Congrats on that doctorate! See if you able to bring back a brace of spanish game guns (example - a 12 or 16 and a 20). I know someone who brought back a matched pair of beautiful Lauronas from UK to SE Asia (believe those are amongst the least expensive of Basque guns)....very nice though. He has so far been using those for Upland for the past seven years. I don't suppose importing such to Canada would be much complicated if you were bringing those for personal use?

Rifles, you could always buy here :)

John Y: yes those are beautiful. Too bad current production doesn't seem to include the cartridges I'm brooding over. I'll be keeping my eye out though.

Kimberman and Ahsan: That's good thinking - it means though that I have to jump through all the hoops here to acquire the gun in the first place, and I'm not even sure I'd be allowed because I'm on a visa. I have not looked into it carefully, but from what I do understand it'd tough. I hadn't really thought through though that this might be my only chance at some kinds of guns so perhaps I should follow this up more thoroughly.

RG,

I bought a 6.5 Krieger barrel last August and a Stiller Predator (SA, 308 bolt face with trigger, bottom metal included) in November. Both were shipped to a gunsmith for chambering (260 Rem) & assembly. Then it goes to Robertson Composites for bedding into a General Purpose hunting stock.

You really need to try and get to a gun shop over there - Mckay Brown is in Bothwell, not too far from your profile location but I believe is appointment only.

If an upland shotgun is in your future, I would definitely look into what you'd have to do get the permits to buy one there, then bring it back with you. From what I can tell, used boxlocks from lesser known makers sell for much less in the UK than they would here. I would think for a few hundred dollars more than a new IGA, you could buy a used gun there that would incomparably higher in quality, particularly if you don't mind a non-ejector gun.

I have heard good things about this dealer in Glasgow and I know he is familiar with exporting guns and should be able to tell you what red tape would be involved:

Graham Mackinlay & Co Gunmakers, Strathleven House, Dumbarton, Glasgow G82 3PD
Tel: 01389 751122 | enquiries@gmackinlay.com

Also Dig Hadoke, who can help you find a gun in your price range at auction and also knows all about export:

Good luck!

When you do get back to Canada what province are you calling home? That does not really matter, however when you hunt big game are we talking moose and bear?, or bambi and chickens? If you are hung up on a 6.5mm then I would recommend a .264 win mag. It is one of the least talked about most awsome deer / moose killers out there. The problem with the major gun manf's is only remington is still offering them in the sendero model (shame on winchester). It really shines with a 26" tube, low recoil and bambi at 500 yds. go down as long as you can dope your wind. As far as the .416 ruger, I'm with you on that one. When Ruger introduced that new brass the first thing I thought of was a .416.

Thanks Dave,

I'll followed up on those web sites and it was tough to find anything under £2000. But probably talking to these folks in person might both help me find the guns that must be out there in a more reasonable price range and, as you said, get through the red tape.

With all the BS gun laws they have over there wouldn't people be getting rid of guns? For the the right person in the right place, you might find some gems, that people are dumping.....just a thought.

zthou - Ontario is home, but there's no certainty that it's where I'll be coming home to. While I'd like all my big game guns to be moose-worthy, that's not really the idea for the 6.5 slot (though I do consider 6.5s in general moose worthy). It's tempting to go for the magnum, and perhaps I will, but I'm thinking I want something that's fast but a little more mild for this particular gun. My limited experience with the highest velocity magnums (all through others) has been that it becomes a little trickier to really get them tuned in to really great accuracy. Of course I know there are plenty of great shooting magnums out there, but I think my chances might be best with something milder.

Ben - I wouldn't doubt it. Some of the other guys' posts here have convinced me to look into it. Wouldn't that be nice!

RG,

I took a look at Graham Mackinlay's site and I see you're right that he does have only more expensive guns listed right now. To get an idea of what you might be able to find at a more realistic price, you can check auction catalogs online and see the pre-sale estimates and then check back and see what things actually sold for. Here's a link for one coming up soon (the boxlocks are on the last few pages):

http://auctions.holtandcompany.co.uk/asp/searchresults.asp?st=U

I believe the buyer pays something like 15 or 20% on top of the hammer price. The second website I mentioned above has links to all the auction catalogs.

Sotheby's has a gun auction in Scotland every August. If I were living over there I wouldn't miss the chance to go on one of the viewing days and check out some guns I'll never be able to afford!

Dave

I love my 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser but it is true that during this past deer season carrying it around for at least 6 hours everyday through the woods along with a pack was a lot of weight for me in the end.
