Am looking for some info on a Iver Johnson side by side hammerless 12ga. No engraving on the receiver, but has these markings:

- Hercules Grade
- Iver Johnson Arms + Cycle work(Canada) Ltd - Montreal
- Made in Cobourg

From what I could find, it was a well made, mass produced utility gun. What I do not understand is it says "Made in Cobourg" but everything I find says they were made in Fitchburg, Mass. Were these brought into Canada by Cooey ??

Sorry I have no pic's since the shotgun is not with me.

As far as anyone knows, Iver Johnson had a contract with Cooey to assemble shotguns for them before Cooey started making their own. Supposedly it cut through red tape of some sort for Iver Johnson by having the guns assembled here. I have a real nice Iver Johnson .410 that is marked like yours.

The IJ Hercules was a good quality boxlock shotgun and some were made in Ontario. I had a 28 gauge Champion single shot that was Coburg made. I have seen Champions not marked as Iver Johnsons but Ranger, that are also marked Coburg.

Yeah, I have a Ranger marked 12 gauge Iver as well. There is a fair amount of value to the Hercules SXS's in so far as what utility grade American boxlocks bring. If it were a skeeter grade it would be worth a lot more. Of course overall condition and originality has a lot to do with value. To get an idea, check online sites such as gunbroker, guns america or guns international. It will give you an idea of value but remember a lot of those prices are asking prices and not what they actually sell for. Some guns on those sites have been for sale for a year or more.

Saw one a short while ago on Elwood Epps website. They wanted $250 for it and rated it very good condition. That seems a little low but it was listed for over a month. Personally I think if it is in very good shape and still tight with good bores, it should be worth around $400. Jeez, you can buy a Stevens 311 for $250.
