Will be shooting a 240gr. swc cast bullet in a ruger redhawk with a 5.5"" barrel without a gas check, using unique powder and cci magnum primers. How many grains of powder do you suggest for a medium load so there is minimal leading and how many fps will the load produce. Regards!!!!

First off and no offense intended, please get a proper reloading manual. It's full of info and a godsend.
As for the load, I searched around here and on a few other boards and found a nice loading of Unique and a 240grn hard-cast bullet.
Double checked in the manual and loaded some up.
For me, 9.0grn of Unique works well for a plinking load and the lead build-up is minimal.
It's stronger by a good measure than a 44SPL but less than a full house 44MAG load.
Not too sure but using the Magnum primers is not required for this combo, regular Large Pistol will do.
Be forwarded though, these rounds are a little too smokey for indoor shooting IMHO. Will likely go to a plated bullet and/or a different powder.

actually, the 44 special is a good, soft , plinking load- then BUILD your powder charge until you get comfortable-after a while, then get into the magnum loadings- and you don't NEED to pay the extra 3 bucks for MAGNUM loadings until you switch powders to something like ww296 or the REALLY heavy powders- the ones where you make the backstops ring

I play anywhere between 9.5 and 13 grains of Unique in my Redhawk. 13 grains is a little on the hot side through. 240 grain round nose cast bullets (from a Lee mold to be exact...no gas check req).
As many rounds as I've put through that gun....I've never actually done a formal load developement on it. If you get something that's really accurate, pass it along so I can see if it works in mine. Go buy the Lyman cast bullet reloading book. It's worth the money and then some.

Any reason you're wanting to use magnum primers? Magnum primers are about the powder used. They're made to light hard to ignite powders and cold weather shooting. Unique doesn't need 'em. Nothing horrible will happen if you do use 'em though.
All my .44 Mag's love 8 grn of Unique and keith type bullet sized to .431.
Don't really need the mag primers as was stated before, keep them for 2400 powder, but if that is all you have no need to worry.
6 grn of Unique and it feels like a .38 spl. 8 Grn of Unique is about the same as a .357. Any loading over 10 grn of Unique has had horrible accuacy in all my revolvers, never seen a group under 4" at 25 yards with the hotter Unique loads. With 8 Grn I can put all 6 shots inside 2" double action off a rest, single action and it drops to about 1".

I have to agree on the primer issue. I use large pistol or magnum, depending on what I have. Unique will go off everytime no matter which ones you use. I've even used large rifle primers in the Redhawk.
