All serial numbers match except for the fore barrel band which appears newer. All else appears good and original? There is a bayonet as well but doesn't appear matching or anything special as far as I can tell...?

What have I got? What's it worth?
 
The barreled action is a very uncommon 660 code made at Steyr, Austria. Only a handful are known in original matching condition. Unfortunately your rifle has been refurbished maybe in East Germany or elsewhere post war. It should have a flat butt plate and H style front band and probably a walnut stock. The floor plate is Mauser Oberndorf and from a late war rifle having no capture screws for the action screws. German WaA look to have been peened to remove the swastikas which was common with eastern European refurbs. Someone with more knowledge than me can comment further(like JB mauser or Canadian AR). Value may be higher than a run of the mill refurbed rifle in a more common code. My 2 cents.
 
Thanks for the leads guys. According to opinions via PM and in person, it's a refurb not worth anything - to - it's a desirable rifle in great shape and worth north of $500? I'm more confused than ever now...
Are there any Milsurp specialists I can go to to get the straight dope?
 
There is no straight dope. Its worthless compared to what it would be worth if it was an untouched original but its still a nice example of the breed that should sell for $500-800 depending on how bad somebody wants it.
 
In my opinion it is worth more than $500. A Russian capture is a refurb as well and you don't see many selling for less than $500. Plus even though the markings are defaced(same as many RC's) it is a very rare code/year. If a guy was collecting Steyr made K98's I would think it would be appealing as if you put it in the proper stock with proper hardware it would make a good placeholder for a code/year that you will probably never find. I don't think many realize how scarce 1939 660's are. I think I read somewhere that they were all issued to the Luftwaffe but don't know if that is true or not.
 
It's kind of odd but I find many of the nicer post war refurbs don't seen to sell for much more than an RC despite being in much nicer condition.
 
Desporterizer has a point. The other post war refurbs usually contain less wartime parts, and are always reblued. Russian ones are reblued as well but it can be undone sometimes. And often times most markings are untouched which is more interesting opposed to ground and renumbered parts.

the OPs role is an east German police refurb. Aka VOPO, aka volkspolezi, Note the sunburst stamps overtop Of the German proof marks and final acceptances.

I'd agree with the $500 assessment. Sadly just a original barrelled action isn't rare. These rare guns are really only rare in original trim.

Post war rebuilds have their place in the K98K's history but unfortunately will never approach original pre and war time originals to collectors and so they shouldn't. You have a nice representation of the K98K, after all remember it still is a "German made battle rifle" hence,.. it will always have value over any reproduction of the variant, that a state arsenal rebuilt at sometime after the war.

At least you know for sure you have a build on a Steyr 660 action and barrel, the bases of any rifle. My scrubbed Yugo capture I believe to be an original Steyr but it required a lot of detective work to try and discern the barreled action origin for my own info, so not as desirable in equal condition to your rifle, except as a pure shooter grade rifle maybe.

The Yugos like mine are going for 495 to 595 I believe now, check out the EE and dealers so depending on your bore condition and functioning properly I'd say the high end of the refurbed Yugo price would be your starting value and up from there depending on who want's to pay more.

I am only a noob to the K98K, but see what entry level rifles are going for here in Canada these days, and.............

No milsurp collection is complete with a German K98K in it's proper wartime trim, even mismatched or otherwise.......:dancingbanana:
