Hi all,

Two weeks ago, I bought my first gun, K98 RC. I had the opportunity to go in store and hand select my own rifle. Despite the opportunity presented to me, I only opted to look at 2 rifles, both had good bore at first glance, however the other had significantly worn stock so I opted for the other one. I cleaned the bore with hot water, acetone, methyl, mek, and days later hopps bore cleaner. What I had thought was good bore initially turned out to be in my opinion, extremely pitted bore and worn rifling. Could you guys give me your opinion on how bad the condition is? Attached is a link to the pictures i have taken. Thanks https://imgur(dot)com/a/PIoJr

Well - Hard to say. The first pic shows pretty decent rifling.... You need to give the bore a good soak - I use Wipe-out, to get rid of age old copper and powder fouling. Bear in mind that the bore can be dimensionally very good, but pitted due to corrosive ammo - very common in milsurps. A rifle with this condition can still shoot very well.
Does the rifling spin your bore brush?

Yes. Using the non-Hoppes liquids you mention are pretty well a waste of time... If you don't have Wipeout, you can use Hoppes, or any other normal bore cleaner, as follows:

1) Cut a strip of patch 1/4 in X 2 in, and wrap around your bore brush in a spiral.

2) Wet the patch with Hoppes, pass through the bore.

3) Let sit for 1/2 hour. Repeat patch process, but only wet half of the patch (at the trailing end of the brush)

4) Let sir for 1 hour. Repeat.

5) Let sit for 2 hours. Repeat.

6) Let sit for 4 hours.

Continue to repeat if desired, finishing without any Hoppes on the patch. If the bore is pitted, it will be impossible to get it clean and bright, so continued soaks are fruitless. By the time you get to 6), the bore is likely as good as its going to get. At that point, you can better assess the rifling. However, the definitive test is to shoot it, for the reasons stated in a previous post.

I can't see the pictures when I click the link.

I will say that if the bore is pitted you could scrub that thing for a year and still get dirty patches come out if the bore.

I used to spend a fair amount of time scrubbing bores of milsurps that I just purchased.

Now I clean and inspect the rifle I clean the bore to ensure it's not packed with crud.

Then I fire the rifle.

I find after shooting a gun the bore often looks 10x better then if I spent hours cleaning it.

The first gun I bought on here was a Turkish mauser. The bore was filthy when I got it. The bore was dark and pitted with deep sharp rifling.I tried several different bore cleaners to no avail.

So after a month of pushing dirty patches out of the muzzle I decided to shoot it. The gun to this day shoots well and the bore after a couple hundred rounds is still dark but is shiney.
