Im looking to buy a rifle, (my first) and I was really interested in the Remington 700 SPS .223.

With shipping and everything it comes to about $740, not sure if this is a good price or not so what do you think?

The price is pretty much at the max amount of cash i can spend right now.

If anyone has any other suggestions for a rifle or another variation of the 700 PLEASE tell me, I appreciate any help in the matter.

Igormon, The caliber is an EXCELLENT choice for a rifle, especially a first rifle. It is an easy caliber to shoot and it can be accurate to very long distances.

The "plain" SPS is a light barreled hunting rifle, and while it will not be any more or less accurate than a heavy barrel rifle, the lighter barrels heat up more when being used as a target rifle (Hunting rifles - varmint rifles excluded - are only meant to shoot one or two rounds at a time and thus do not heat up).

Perhaps give some thought to the varmint model with the heavier barrel. It can be quite accurate and they are lots of fun.

FWIW, I have a gun safe full of full-on custom and customized rifles, but I use a completely stock, unmodified SPS Varmint rifle for shooting gophers. I love them.

I agree with obtuned 223 is an excellent caliber.I dont want to start the Remington vs ... thing but the model 700 which I was also considering, is a 1 in 12 twist, it limits your bullet selection if you hand load.Savage is a 1 in 9 and tikka is a 1 in 8 both will allow you to shoot heavier bullets so you can shoot more accurately at longer distances.
one thing to consider if you want to targetévarmint shoot.
