Need Opinions on a Lightweight Rifle for Friend....

no,..not much...I put together a couple 25-284's, one on a short 700, the other a Model Seven,.. and they fed fine...that's all I know...did a 284 on an L579 Sako..it fed well also...and I did a 284 on a short 700 for "cccan"...but his is a bastardized action with a 3-1/4" mag box....feeds well also....maybe he'll sell it to you....

I contemplated a 284 Win on a Rem 700 action, but the mag box constraints concerned me. I seated a bunch of bullets out 2.850" and the ogive was below the case neck (or darned close) with most of sleek high BC bullets that interested me.

In leu of having the action work done to increase the mag length, I decided on my original choice, the 7-08AI.

The 284 win will work in a 700 SA though if you're not super fussy on seating depth...

Not totally fussy on seating depth, but totally fussy on good feeding, hence the idea that possibly the AI might be the better option.....

I have to do some more reading on AI stuff and convince myself to go that direction, but god I do love the 284Win.....just think the AI is pretty damn cool too...
 
Weatherby Ultra Lightweights are 5.75 lbs in standard and 6.57 in Magnum, Ive handled one at the store and shot my friends 7mm, thats fairly light for a 7mm IMO, but the stock design sure tames it.
 
Trev, the following has to be the best lightweight get er done rifle blueprint I've come across. It's Mtn Hunter's and I've spoken with him on the phone about it on a couple of ocassions. He went the 06 route, I'd go the 280 route, but here it is.

I have a hard time with the weight on this one...unless my scale is way out which is possible...but my factory tubed 7-08 Ti with regular 2 pc Leupold mounts and a 2.5-8X Leupy weighs 6lbs 6 oz....that's a full half pound heavier than mtnhunter's '06....where is the extra weight on mine? I'd like to know because I bought a set of Talley Lightweights and I plan on lightening it up some more if I can. I can't see the 2.5-8X being that much heavier than the 6X...

Stock and action for starters. One thing I'll guarantee, and that is the weight of that rifle. It will have been weighed on a digital scale and weighed again to check.

That stock weighs 22 oz's. Throw yours on the scale and see what it goes.

my stock is 24 oz....wonder where the other 6oz are...I am going to swap out the mounts while it's apart...

the whole rig is 6lbs 4 oz, not 6lbs 6oz as I thought.

Do all Talley Lightweights for 700's have the front ring offset from the center of the screw holes?...I may have a couple sets for sale here right away......

There are very few people who don't handload that can actually shoot as well as your buddy's requirement. In fact, there are very few guys I know that don't live on the internet who can actually show a long series of targets that good from hunting rifles of any weight much less a less than 6 lbs magnum rifle.

Why not just get a lightweight factory rifle if he isn't going to handload for it?

Sako Finnlight, kimber, etc. The Sako is a detachable mag, the others aren't.

I think he's dreaming in technocolour and it's unlikely any rifle will make him happy if that list is what it takes.
 
Is your 7-08 a Ti? If it isn't, I'm suprised it is as light as it is and would think your scales aren't weighing correctly. They're weighing light!

I'll run down stairs and weigh a couple of shroud/pin assemblies to compare weight savings there.

swapped out the Leupy mounts for the Talleys and I'm at 6lbs 1 oz.......my firing pin is an aluminium shroud job of unknown make....


I did the calculations and using a 20" length (roughly 22" minus the chamber) a .284" bore should be .063 oz heavier than a .308" bore....using the old standard of .2833 oz per cubic inch of steel...so there's less than a tenth of an ounce there....

my scale is a Homs Model 10 Instrument & Laboratory scale..Made in Japan....I assumed it was OK, but it must be reading a bit heavy....

Jeez...I must have something better to do on Sat nite....:)
