Need opinions on Over/Under purchase

If you are just getting into the game, and are unsure about your long term interest, the Churchill may suit your purposes. Most field guns these days have an auto safety, I wouldnt let that deter you as they can be easily disconnected. If you decide to go the Churchill route, I would ask some pointed questions about warranty support and service in Canada. BTW - Used Churchills list regularly on the EE for ~800$.

Yeah, that's why I figured a budget in the $1000 range was realistic. I just didn't know about the divide around weather or not they're worth getting and the massive price increase for even a used Beretta or Browning is kinda painful. Handy to know that you can disconnect them easily. Thanks.

That's discouraging, makes sense though with the market these days. I shoot clays with my brother fairly regularly with his 870 or my dad's xps so I know I like doing it. I understand the advice about buying a semi in the mean time but I don't want to buy a gun I don't want and then have to deal with selling. Thanks.

Id have no issues recommending one to someone with a lesser budget to start out with. They depreciate about the same as a beretta 686. The 686 2800 new and sell for 2000 used. Churchills range from 900 to 1300 and sell for 800 to 900 used. The orcap is not the cheapest model of the churchill ou line either
If the conrad fit you there was a 12ga listed in the ee for i believe $1400 if its still there. I do not know the seller but myself have been tempted to try a fausti. The conrad is the entry level from them though. Im interested in sub gauges and have not heard or read much negative about the fausti guns

A used beretta 68x series or browning or even winchester 101 or 96 are all great options as well and if bought on the used market will likely keep their buying price if you choose to upgrade later
As for sport shooting clays yes guns are expensive but if you plan on shooting regularly the cost of ammo will surpass the price of the gun quicker than you might expect

Okay for myself I don't really think of gun purchases with resale in mind, it's like ammo. I buy it to use it but don't expect anything left over afterwards, maybe that's a mindset I need to change and getting a more expensive gun wouldn't be so bad.

More trap than anything else because club throwers are set up for that more but I do plan to get into sporting clays when I have my own shotgun. Also there's the dicking around out in the back 40 with slugs occasionally.
 
I shoot with a fellow who shoots skeet at our club twice each week with a Savage Stevens 555, 100 rounds each time so 200 rounds a week. He used the same gun for sporting clays a couple seasons when he used to shoot competitive sporting clays up until two or three years ago. It's a 4.10 with screw chokes. It's had thousands of rounds through it and never fails and is still as tight to open as my XT Trap Citori with just as many rounds down the pipe. I would take one of those over that turkish gun any day of the week after seeing it in action. This is a picture from online of the same gun.....the fit and finish of it is surprisingly good. At first glance I thought it was a Beretta the first time I saw it standing in the rack on the skeet field.

I agree with the idea of buying the used quality brands. Although I have not handled every maker's trap models, I believe most O/U shotguns sold as trap models do not have the auto safeties, like the field guns.

Now, as far as slugs through a full choke trap barrel, I wouldn't wish that on even the worst bargain basement gun from any maker.

6 flats of shells is an average month for a dedicated shooter. I have seen a 555 break after 2 rounds of skeet.

Buy a used Browning Citori for your first O/U.
You will not be disappointed (my subjective opinion only) as you will get value for $$spent.
You'll get pretty good fit right off the rack and there is no auto safety to fuss with.
Check out the Site Sponsors or your other lgs in your area.
You have lots of time to shop/surf as the mail will be backlogged due to the weather and it being just a few weeks from Christmas.
Reliable had a couple of Superposed that looked nice, but have since sold...they are another fine gun but require some research for new O/U owners to be imo.

I'm sorry but I have a 555 because of course it was a 28ga and had to be added to the herd . Not something I would be shooting many clay targets out of
Might be ok for hunting. Not even close to the CZ's I have

I owned a Churchill and sold it pronto, to me it was a waste of money, my savage 555 is nice but super light duty. I ended up with a S12E Huglu, its a beast, beautifully built, amazing wood, steel construction, ejectors and great hard case, here is a link

CZ's are made by HUGLU , I forgot to mention, mechanical trigger and no auto safety
