Need opinions

Pretty much anything will work for caribou from a .25-06 up to a .300 Mag of some description.

Personally I would try and get a handle on the type of rifle and make that you want and then factor in the cartridge. For a grand you have quite a few choices.
 
Caribou are sucks, and they succumb quickly when hit well with even small caliber bullets. I would agree that the .25-06 is a good starting point, and if you are only going to own just one rifle a .300 magnum is not out of the question. As pointed out, on the tundra range is deceptive, and the wind is always blowing. If you can set yourself up in a good hide after spotting a heard, they'll graze right up to your boots, but most guys aren't that patient. How about a Remington 7600 pump in .270 or .30-06 topped off with a Leupold VX-1 3-9X40 scope? I've always found these rifles to be easy carrying and amazingly accurate. I just checked the prices in the Wholesale catalog and this outfit would just put you at $1K.

Abolts can and do shoot well, and alot of hunters are big Browning fans. 308 Win is a great hunting cartridge.

Sounds like a good choice all around. I was going to suggest the steven's 200 (bang 4 $) or the A-bolt micro hunter in 7mm08...but that's only what I think would fit my bill.

The important thing is that you like how the rifle handles. As for the caliber, I presently hunt (deer) with a rifle in 308 and I love it. On the other hand, I think the 7mm08 may give you a flatter bullet trajectory. I just don't know if you could find any ammo for it up north...

For optics, I would probably buy a Bushnell Elite 3200.

Opinions are like #######s. Everyone's got one, and they all stink. Still, you asked.

Today, I'm liking the 260 1/2mm smaller than the 7mm08, for just that little bit extra MV. Personally, I hate synthetic stocks, and I feel that a sporter/hunter is better suited to blued finish rather than SS. The new weatherby Vanguard looks neat, but they've seemed rather hit-and-miss in terms of QC for the last few I've tried. You can never go wrong with a Remington 700 of some sort.

Not sure you can get an a-bolt & decent optics for your price range. I've never tried an a-bolt, but I hear good things.

But remember, one is never enough. :)
 
Paul the Stevens are exceptional rifles for the price, however they are fairly light and likely the larger caliber may have some extra recoil that you won't find in a 25-06. I really enjoy my 25-06 and with a 3-9x40 elite 3200 at $249.00, Leupold rings and bases for $69.00, the Stevens guns go for anywere between $299.00 at SIR to $369.00 at P&D. That leaves about $300.00 to stock up on ammo, at $38.00 a box for 115gr Federal nosler partitions, 7 boxes should do you for quite sometime. FS
 
Caribou are not a large animal and don't take a lot of power to drop. A good 25 06 is more than adequate. I turned a buddy on to it and he sold his 7 mm mag. Since that time he has harvested moose elk and many deer with it. They double as a real good varmint round too. If you figure that you need a little more jam, then a 270 winchester would be more than sufficient. As for a rifle, go to a reputable dealer and try out different manufacturers offerings and choose the one that fits you and your budget. Check with wholesale sports in lethbridge. They had a ruger #1 in 270 winchester used for about 600. It was in pretty good shape. You didn't say if you were looking for a new one or a good used one.
 
As a couple of posters [obviously with some experience] have said, Caribou are not hard to put down. You do not need some shoulder mounted cannon to kill them. That being said, ranges can occasionally be on the longish side, so a flat shooting iron is not a bad idea. My personal choice would be the 270 Winchester in the SPS or the Savage/Stevens 200, with the best optics that I could buy inside the stated monetary limit. I would load the 130 Interbond or the 140 Accubond, and Caribou look out!! Regards, Eagleye.
