Im trying to pick my next rifle, and it's between the mossberg night train 2 or a cz 858. Not sure if this is even the right spot for this! I like the mossberg because it comes with a scope and bipod, ready to go out of the box! I also think the 858 is a very fun rifle, used one a couple times. Is the mossberg for the money a good way into precision shooting or should I just grab an 858 and save up for a better precision rig???? Oh and the mossberg is on sale so both guns are within $50 or so!!

Thanks

Buy yourself what ever Savage or Remington you can buy for the price of the Mossberg. That way you have a gun that you can upgrade later on.

Just my $0.02.

:agree:

A quick look finds a Savage 10 FP around $670 and a Remington SPS $616 That's in .223 wich is what you might want to consider if it's your first center fire. You may not have enough coin to get a good scope but you could get a fixed 10 power Bushnell 3200 for under $200. It might get you buy for a bit. Right now I can find a Remington SPS in .223 and a Busnell 3200 10X for under $800 before tax. I'd say that beats the cheap sherry any day.

I would agree with the other posters.

Rem or Savage and a Bushnell 3200 10x to start.

I started with a stock Rem 700 and then put it in Tube gun chassis. I also started with a 3200 10x before upgrading when I had the funds.

I started with 308 but I would suggest 223. Cheaper to shoot and less recoil so you are less likely to develop bad habits like a flinch. 223 can be very competitive in FTR. It took me some time to get used to 308 and now pretty much exclusively shoot 260 and 6.5x47L and just started to shoot Fopen.

Go with Rem or Savage and you have a rifle you can upgrade for years. Worked for me but ymmv.

Good luck to you!

Thanks for the replies! I guess I need to do more research and go fondle some rifles. I've been doing a lot of target shooting with my .22 and find it very addicting trying to go farther and farther!!!

Hijack and sorry but the further you go the more addicting! Be ready for the total costs ie: bragging rights = next challenge = new rifle = further distance = bragging rights = new rifle or caliber = further distance = bragging rights = reload equipment and time = load development = further distance = bragging rights = on and on and on and be ready for some self control. Shooting at distance is like doing drugs. You start with something minor and graduate with something major!

I would push shooting distance rather than shooting drugs any day. It costs the same now that I think of it? Hmmmmmm?
Man I gots the #### that will make you happy! So do you want to try some 500meter, 1000m, 1500m? I can hook you up
