Need Pistol

What is the best and least expensive (I know that good and "cheap" are mutually exclusive but humour me) pistol I can get. I want to spend less that $500 (I don't mind used).

I know different people like different guns, but just provide me with your suggestion, please don't just say "it depends on your preference".

I would also stipulate either 9mm or .45.

Please specify make, model, calibre and where I can get it, ie Ellwood, Al Flahertys, Freedom, Marstar, etc.

thanks for the suggestion but I think the SR9 is rather small, I have large hands. And the Mr. Ruger relates to the 10/22 not pistols.

good suggestion, I was thinking something along those lines, why the 1911 and not a Sig or CZ clone? also why in 9mm and not .45?

If you don't like the 1911, then the Sig clones work well. I have seen good reports on the CZ clones, but no firsthand experience on them. .45ACP is about 50% more expensive than 9mm, maybe more now. If you are trying to save money on the gun, that sort of implies operating costs may be an issue as well. If that is the case, 9mm is the much better choice.
