My very good friend has been borrowing my rifle for the last 5 years . Now he wants to purchase it from me . But I don,t want to give it away or rip him off . It,s a remington mountain rifle in 30/06 , glass bedded , tuned trigger, floated barrel. Will consistently shoot .625" groups with 165gr Fusions or .3" with my handloads . Has some scratches on the stock and a VX 11 3X9X40 on it . Some suggestions would greatly be appreciated .
Thanks Todd

I would say $750-$850 without actually seeing the gun. Depending on whether you want to discount it for your friend. Scope value is around $300.00 and gun would be $500-$600. Cheers,

Patrick

I agree that the scope is worth $300, but I'd up the number on the rifle itself. It's a mountain rifle, so that's worth a bit more, and you've had some work done on it, so that adds more too. Since it shoots very nicely that adds some $ right there. If you were selling it to a stranger, you wouldn't be out of line for asking $1000 for the package. What you discount to your friend is your choice.

There are a lot of Remington 700s listed in the EE. The BDLs are listed between $700 and over $1000.00. Most without scopes or with bargain scopes.

I would think your Mountain rifle setup should be worth between $1000 and $1300.00. Let your friend price up new/used rifles and see what he offers. If he is a good friend he should be willing to pay you a fair price.

If he doesn't want to pay your price he can always continue borrowing it for free.

I wouldn't discount too much on account of the scratches, as your buddy more than likely put his share there too! Assuming both rifle/scope in A+ condition, I'd sell it for $850-$900 taking into account all the use he's already gotten out of it and replacment cost right now.

If it were my friend who wanted to buy my rifle after using it for 5 years . . . then he would have to make me an offer and I would not be that open to negotiating. Then the next time he wants to borrow it I would see how willing he is to buying it. If he can keep borrowing it why would he want to buy. There is something to be said about buying a cow and milking it through the fence.

I think $750.00 would be a reasonable price for you to ask. He should also buy you a bottle for using it for the last 5 years.

I have to agree with others that have suggested that your friend look at the prices of new and used rifle/scope combos and then make you an offer.

If you think the offer it too much you can always accept a comfortable amount less. My guess is you are into it for less than he will offer as you have had the rifle for some time.

The snoop in me would like to know what you finally decide though so post us the final result so we can all get over the suspense...

Cheers, Bob

timmy hit the nail on the head. Ask him what he wants to pay for it. If it's not a lowball offer then go for it and just "borrow" enough stuff from him that you get back to even money :D

Seriously though, what's a hundred bucks, give or take. Name your price and if he wants it, great, if he doesn't, fine. Personally, I wouldn't sell the rifle. But then again, I don't like selling them at the best of times, let alone when they shoot that well.

I have sold plenty of guns to friends and it can make things pretty uncomfortable when you have a number and they have a number. Whats couple hundred bucks between friends. He's had it for five years now, basically his property, LOL so you might aswell get a few bucks out of it, because you had nothing before, and you both will be happy. Doing it this way no one feels like the other one ripped the other one off just my 2 cents again..
