Looking for an affordable (not cheap) compact rifle scope - something around 10 inches or less long with either fixed or variable magnification for short to medium range shooting.

So far, I've been able to find mostly low-end no-name brands like Firefield and UTG that have suspect glass. Not looking for top quality, just decent quality for the price.

Top contenders currently are Bushnell AR71424 AR Optics 1-4x24 at 9.3 inches long and the Bushnell AR72736 AR Optics 2-7x36 at 10.6 inches long

Can someone make a recommendation?

If you want inexpensive without sacrificing too much quality, a fixed power scope from a solid manufacturer will be cheaper, lighter, simpler, more rugged, and provide better optical quality than any variable power scope at the same price point. I have had truly first-rate experience with Bushnell 3200, SWFA, and Leupold FX-II fixed power scopes. They've been on semi-auto battle rifles, a bolt action precision rifle, a break action slug gun, and on two different Scout rifles.

My three questions are this - what is your budget? What rifle is it going on? What do you want to use that rifle for?
