Need rifle suggestion/advice

Hello,

I'm looking for a hunting rifle in 6.5 CM preferably, but I can consider 6.5 SWEDISH or 308 WIN or even 8mm MAUSER. I'm going for these calibers as I have target rifle and MILSURP rifle in those calibers already.

The issue though, is I would prefer a rifle with iron sight, which seems hard to find to some extent, and with a 20'' to 22" inch barrel. Having a box mag will be a plus.

I know that Tikka makes the T3x Arctic, but I'm not sure that I'm willing to pay that price for a rifle that I will only use only 2-3 times a year.

I also had a look at the Tikka T3x Battue series, and the Ruger Scout and the CZ 557 Ranger, but I'm not that knowledgeable for these rifles.

I was wondering if there's any other rifle that you can recommand, or if any rifle I mentionned is a no-brain choice or a clear no-go.

Go for the stainless-synthetic Tikka T3x lite in either of the 6.5's or 308 and get iron sights put on by a gunsmith. You'll have the slickest rig you can get with all the features you're looking for and it'll cost about half of what the arctic cost.
 
I think the CZ557 Ranger is an excellent option if you can find one as they aren't being made anymore. I lucked out and found one on the EE.
The Tikka Battue is also a great option. They also seem hard to find. Dorian Gray's suggestion sounds like a good one.

I was recently looking for a 6.5, trying to decide between the .260 rem the 6.5 cm and the 6.5x55, I went with a Husqvarna 1900 from Tradeex. I considered quite a few options including Tikkas, Sauer, Remington model 7s. It depends on your intended use and budget, I also have a Ruger Scout in 450 BM and if I didn't have that I might have considered one in 308.

How do you like the 557 ? I know that I saw a thread on it and it was quite positive.

The use will be mostly midsize game hunting, but I don't hunt that size of game often either. I normally spend more time in waterfowl/migratory birds or small game hunting.

Interesting. Do you know how is the cleaning with the Henry ? Is it one of those lever action like the BLR that is not user friendly to dissemble ?

I don't know I just saw one the other day on a website and it fit what OP was looking for, having not listed a preference for action type.. I also saw a Stainless Savage AXIS with sights in 6.5CM.
 
I just bought a Zastava M70 from Tradex; 6.5 x 55 SE, brand new. Lots of reviews to say that the wood to metal fit leaves a bit to be desired, but that is furnature. The barreled action and trigger are amazing, as is the brilliant, polished bluing. I have shot nothing but home loads, and the one I settled on is shooting sub MOA at 100 yards with cheap bullets and moderately loaded ammo. I will be bedding it eventually, and will be trying some match quality projectiles. These rifles are the price of a mid quality used rifle, but are on par, with a little work, with rifles that cost 2-3 times as much. First time shooter shot mine on Saturday, and shot 1 1/4" (yes, first time shooting a rifle) at 100 yards.

I was in a similar boat as you, looking for a bolt action with open sights. I ended up purchasing a 308 Tikka T3x Battue and eventually swapped the stock with a T3x compact stock off EE, I need a short LOP. I'm a old school 308 guy and strictly hunt deer and black bear on my property within 100 yards or less.

Several reasons why the Tikka: 15% off sale from Sail. Slick/ smooth action. I can remove the front and rear sight and go strictly scoped, however I do have it setup with a Leupold 2-7x with removable Warne Tikka specific rings. Because it's a Tikka I can upgrade parts and barrel easily if I choose so. Lastly, it's really nice and light to carry around in the woods. IIRC about 6.5 lbs.

Cz 557 is a quality rifle. Some good deals on the synthetic stock versions with irons around right now too...$700 range.
 
I have zeroed 2 X 783 308 Win 16.5 in for family. I mounted a 3x9 on one and a red dot on the other. These rifle are very accurate, they have the X7 Marlin ADN. Cant go wrong. JP.
 
I got my Ranger today. It's a gorgeous rifle.
The whole rifle is 40" long. A nice handy length. The bolt cycles as smooth as a Tikka and the trigger has some pre-travel but breaks smooth and clean. Light but not to light.
Hopefully I get to the range this weekend.
 
Thank you everyone for the suggestion. I'll go do my homework and compare the different rifles suggested, and make a decision. Currently, I'm leaning toward either a Tikka or the 557.

OP .... I'm not sure why folks continue to want a rifle with open sights, esp for a rifle that will be their main hunting rifle.

A good scope in good mounts is a FAR better aiming system. Checks off way more boxes.

If you're worried about having a back-up system, buy QD mounts and a spare scope.
