I would like to buy a semi in either .308 or 30-06 perfer .308. Would like to spend around 300-450 but other then the 742 I haven't seen much else out there. Is there a gun that I'am missing that i should be looking at? Is there something for just a little more that would take away all the jamming worries of the 740 series?

Thanks
Scott

The winchester model 100 is a great option. They pop up on the EE quite regularly. should be easy to find one in your price range.

I second the Model 100. As with any semi, keep it very very clean and it will not let you down. If you don't think you will keep up with this then don't buy a semi. A ruger 44 carbine might be good for you as well.

M-14 comes to mind .

x 2 on this one. The only drawback is that they are heavy beasties and not very scope friendly (cheap mounts).

I have heard the new 2011 Remy 750's are not bad. I have a buddy with one in 308 and his functions flawlessly. It is not a battle rifle, so ya gotta give it a little more TLC. My M14 is a dream to shoot with irons. Ya a little heavy, but so what, it has flawless functioning 5 round mags which are cheap as borsch.

If using a scope, then maybe the Remy would be ok too.
