So it looks like I've been nominated to help my nephew get into reloading.:) He has a Remington 7600 pump in 30/06 and he'd like for me to show him the ropes.

He was mentioning wanting to use a 165 grain Hornady ??point bullet. What are some of the common powders used for this(without being temp sensitive) bullet weight/cartridge? Thanks in advance.

For anything with that capacity like 30-06, 270, 280 etc I always start with IMR4350 as a first choice. Very rare that I have to try other powders to find an accurate load.

Im shooting 165 Gr Hornady SST as well as Nosler spire points - both are deadly accurate with 57 gr of IMR 4350 - I am considering changing powders to see if I can get just as accurate a load with less powder..

4350 is a great choice.

If you would like to get the most velocity out of the 30-06 with a 165 consider trying RL 22.

You can actually get a 165 moving faster than a 150 safely, which offers some nice advantages in trajectory and energy.

The drawback is that it is a compressed load. That same drawback is a plus in that you can't get enough powder in the case to be dangerous.

From Nosler's load data:
Bullet: 165 grain
Powder: RL-22
Charge Weight (in grains)---Muzzle Velocity (fps)----Load Density

63.0-----------------------------3002 fps------------------105%
61.0-----------------------------2907 fps------------------101%
59.0-----------------------------2812 fps------------------98%

RL 22 is also more accurate in my gun than 4350 was.
If you don't mind the slight inconvenience of a compressed load this powder really maximizes the potential of the 30-06.
If you decide to try it, it's worthwhile to try and find brass that has the highest capacity. I think Winchester tends toward that trait.

Also, loading for the 760/7600, you may want to consider Small Base dies.

I have the Nosler Book and they list the RL22 powder as being able to achieve much higher velocities in the 30-06 than the other powders. But on my chrony I can never get the published velocities with any reloader powders, in any of my guns. I've tried the RL22 in 3 different 30-06 rifles, creeping up to max load, and even exceeding it a bit, but I'm always at 2800fps or below with RL22. Same story with my 280, and my 6.5x55, using the RL22 and the RL19. Always way under published velocities by 150 to 200 fps. There's a lot of people who swear by the RL powders, but I'm not one. In my 30-06's I use H4350 right up near max load. With 165 grs I'm nicely over 2900 fps in all my 30-06's, and the accuracy is there too.

Are we looking at a potential problem by just going with a plain old Lee RGB die set(the cheap 2 die set) for use in this rifle?

Not necessarily, as long as the cartridges chamber, feed and extract ok you should be fine. If they don't, small base dies offer a little more insurance with this type of action.

I've never had any trouble like that with any of the RL line, if fact I find I'm often getting slightly better than listed performance. I use RL 7, 15, 17, 19, 22, and 25 as well as Blue Dot in a variety of calibers.
I'm a big fan of that line powders.
I often get my best loads with them.

You won't know until you try. Chances are, there will be no problem. Chambers vary, as do dies. Get a big die and a small chamber and there can be problems.
Back to the powder, its never a bad idea to start with one of the 4350s with an aught 6.

I actually like WC-735 (H-335). I use it pretty consistently over all my shooting. In my 30-06, it groups .75 - 1.25" at 100, not much recoil and boosts 150s over 2900fps. But I don't shoot as well as I did when I was a kid. Need more time spent shooting. Have to allow for that this year.
