need some advice on AR s

Hi guys been using guns all my life thinking about getting an AR 15 never even held one until today looking at windam weaponry or a dpms lots of types out there or is it better to build your own not totally sure what to get I think I would stick with 5.56 caliber longer barrel than 16 inch any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
 
With the cost of some ARs today, it's cheaper to buy a fully assembled rifle than it is to assemble your own. If this is your first, I suggest getting a full rifle to begin with. Upgrade the furniture if you so desire but shoot it lots and learn how it works etc. I'm 95% sure you'll end up buying/owning a second one shortly after. You can choose to assemble your own upper or full rifle after acquiring some specialty tools along the way. Just be warned, once you start assembling your own, you just can't stop! The fun part is scavenging the EE for parts and slowly build it over time or if you're the impatient type, buy all the parts and assemble one over the weekend... well in 3hrs. It's LEGO!
 
The AR platform is the best combination of versatility, light weight, handling, accuracy and ease of assembly of all the black rifles out there...except maybe for the Tavor ( although the Tavor trigger pales in comparison).
If you can afford it, get the DD and accessorize from there. Once you start with a good foundation, you can't help but end up with a great house! Don't build one! It will end up costing way more than necessary and you will be impatient to try it!
 
Skip the build... Prices are too low on great rifles, and you need $3-500 in specialized tools to do it.

Hunt around and there are GREAT deals on Colt and Daniel Defense... Just a few bucks more than a WW or DPMS and they truly set the standard. Wolverine and Irunguns are good places to start.
 
Build the lower, buy the upper. A $20 enamel hammer and punch plus a $20 spanner wrench will do you.
You can buy the parts YOU want and not have spare's of stuff you'll never need.

It's so simple.
 
Given the choice why would you use anything other than Colt or DD parts? You may replace your trigger with a Giessele or the like, but every LPK comes with one anyway... Spares never hurt.

As JBD points out, you'll always have more trouble selling a frankenbuild than an off the shelf rifle... Save the time and effort, as you won't save any $...

Here's what I tell people:

If budget is an issue and you want to shoot lots and not worry about upgrading your rifle buy a Norc.

If you have a better budget and want to start upgrading right away with rails or grips etc. buy any other AR in your price range.

If you have an great budget and you want a quality rifle with features and not have to upgrade parts buy a Knight's Armament.


If your starting out I always suggest to stay away from doing your own build until you already have an AR that you have taken apart, upgraded etc and get the feel for them.
 
I have built and bought AR's. There is not much money to be saved. Buy a DD shoot and be happy. If you decide to sell the rifle the DD will fetch more than a bitsa. Custom rifles are like custom anything, you rarely if ever get the money back you put in.
