My father passed away last week. And my mother asked me sell some of his firearms to raise a little cash. He has two Weatherbys, one is a Mk5 Deluxe in .257W. And the other is a Varmitmaster in .224W. Both were made in Germany and are in almost perfect condition.

Any advice on what price to ask would be a great help.

Thanks

My condolences for your loss.

I see that you are in the GTA. When I lived near Toronto, I sold a fair number of guns by consigning them through Williams' Arms in Port Perry. The staff there are very knowledgeable and trustworthy, and will give you a fair appraisal of your guns' value. The guns would be listed on their website, complete with photos, and specialty guns like yours (as opposed to run-of-the-mill model 700's and the like) often sell extremely quickly. They take a fair percentage (less than most other retailers I checked) and they are totally above-board and honest in all their dealings. I recommend them without reservation. Now that I live in Manitoba, I continue to deal with them by mail.

Alternatively, Epps in Orillia will buy guns outright for cash, although the price you receive will be substantially lower. It depends upon how quickly you want the money.

Condolences on your father's passing.
I may suggest to not be too hasty in selling them.
That is, unless you don't have any use for them.
Once they're gone, they're gone.

My condolences as well.
I know it is none of my business, but I think kamklooky is wise to suggest not being hasty.

Neither is a real mystery, we're looking at $1400-1800 a piece here in Canada. What we're all saying is keep them, they're his dad's and the little he could get for them will one day seem far too little.

Ardent,
you gave value figures here. The lad asked for figures as his mam asked him to sell them. Everyone realises what you guys are saying but not all people are in a position to do what would be ideal. If your really lucky you may sail through life without honestly understanding that.

Firstly, my condolences.
Any scopes on the rifles?
There have been a couple of German Weatherby's for sale on the EE here for a few months now, asking price $1400. However, as the description is very basic and there are no pictures, it's hard to say what condition they're in.
I would suggest to not sell them to a gun store/gunsmith/gun dealer, as most will give you a low offer. That's nothing against them in general, but they have to make a profit and will generally sell them at a reasonable price as they don't want to hang onto them forever, hence a low offer to you.
If you don't go the Equipment Exchange route on this website, maybe try a bigger dealer sale under consignment. You can set the price and they take a relatively low commission. If they don't sell within a few weeks, you know you've priced them a bit high perhaps. Try lowering the price by $100 or so.

You can also search this website and the US sites like gunbroker.com, gunsamerica.com,etc. While their prices are perhaps a touch high at times, it can give you a ballpark figure.

Maybe someone will see this thread and make you a fair offer, you never know. Good luck in your sale.
