Need some advice on Ruger 10/22

Okay, I finally replaced Old Faithful with a Ruger. I'm generally happy with it, with two exceptions and would appreciate some insight/advice from other 10/22 owners.

The first is that the bolt release is a true PITA. Is there some way to smooth this out or is it just a matter of practice?

The second is worse - the standard magazine release keeps dropping the magazines (not when I am on the range actually shooting, just when I am trying to walk up bunnies in a field, etc). In other words, I don't think it's defective, but the catch seems to be snagging on bushes or something, releasing the magazine. Is there a retrofit available or a shield, etc?

There is a mod in the 10/22 Tips & Tricks section (sticky) at the top of this forum to fix your bolt release problem or you can purchase an aftermarket bolt release with the modification already done.

There are also plenty of great after market mag releases that will certainly help you out. What one you like is a personal preference.

Both are a quick fix and easy to do.

Wham-O - thanks. I looked through that sticky before opening this thread. It's remarkable the number of mods and upgrades for that thing. Is the one you are referring to the one by Goose25? It looks good - have you tried it yourself?

If you have a dremel tool and a round stone, your good to go.
I've done this mod countless times. Never had a problem.
Just go slow and you'll do fine.
 
auto bolt releases are only 12 bucks shipping in, if you don't have a dremel handy, or like me, just prefer to spend the 12 bucks :)
 
I did the bolt release mod before I even shot my brand new 10 22. I used a small round file and went slowly. It works great! As for your magazine release issue, are you sure your magazines are properly seated?
 
Thanks all. I have a Dremel and will have a go at it.

mississaugagunnut - Pretty sure. They feed well enough, which is some indication.
