So I got my Remington 700p out to the range on Sunday, and results were quite frankly horrible.
At 100 yards all my shots were all grouping to the left of my point of aim.
Optic mount, rings, are all torqued on properly and scope is sighted in, action is torqued into the stock as well.
Tried firing off bipod, off bags, off ruck, same results each time.
Rifle is 308Win, 26" heavy barrel, muzzle brake, 21 x mag optic, Magpul 700 hunter stock with mag mod.
Trigger is the stock Remmy trigger, I measured pull at 3 - 5 pounds depending on where I put the trigger pull measurer on the trigger.
It was my first time firing a rifle with a brake. Rifle was loud even with doubled up hearing protection, but recoil was quite light.
Really haven't got much experience firing this type of rifle, used to smaller calibre military rifles with what is probably a 2 stage trigger.
So I gotta ask, how many rounds does it take to get used to firing a rifle like this?
Is the trigger maybe too light or heavy, should I swap it for a 2 stage, or just leave as is perhaps with adjusted pull weight....
Or do I just keep slinging rounds downrange until one of them eventually goes where want it to, any suggestions on how to get better results?

They were grouping left... ok... but how were they grouping? You couldn’t adjust the scope any further?

How far left? What size groups?

If this is your first time firing it in this configuration, how can it be sighted in?

I've seen the POI change on a 6.5 RPR with and without a brake, and also had to re-zero 223 and 6.5G barrels after putting brakes on.
From what I've read, this is caused by the weight of the brake changing barrel harmonics. If your group sizes didn't change, my guess is that this is what you're seeing.

The muzzle brake is new.
I was alone at the firing point so there was nobody else available to do some test firing with my rifle.
One of my friends who has a fair bit of shooting experience has agreed to help me out this coming weekend.
My previous experience with this rifle was firing prone off the ground with the bipod actually dug in a bit.
When shooting like this and leaning forward a little, my rifle shot dead-center and I was able to put shots onto a little post it note at 100yds.
I wasn't aware that a muzzle brake would change barrel harmonics so much.
Will have to double-check to make sure the brake is still torqued on properly, and verify the rest of my setup.

Are your groups still “post-it” sized, but just left of poa? How far left?

Also, sounds like it was shooting just fine in the first place. Haven’t you heard the phrase: “If it ain’t broke, don’t brake it!”

;-P

fyi, things attached to the end of the barrel sometimes, but not always, affect the poi. My 10tr poi moves approx 3in up from no brake vs pws brake. As long as it doesnt affect the size of the grouping dont worry about it.

Well - I have found that the concussion caused by a muzzle brake was more problematic than the recoil it was reducing. I shoot better with the muzzle brake off. BTW - A muzzle brake certainly can affect POI and group size.
