Im sending away for my restricted on friday. I did the course 9 years ago but never had an interest in restricted guns because your stuck at the club.... I have been spending alot of time at the range lately anyway and have been talking to members about IPSC.... It sounds like alot of fun and would like to give it a try... I would like to get some advice from you people as to what I should buy for my 1st hand gun.....I'm a black rifle kinda guy so I would prefer to stay with the tactical looking black or two tone hand gun.. These are a few that have cought my eye...

Smith&Wessson M+P

Glock 17 0r 19

Walther P99

SIG P220

Springfield XD

I dont want to debate 9mm or 45 cal but would like your opinion on what would be the best for IPSC application on a rookie level. Thanks in advance

You should talk more with the IPSC members at your club.Plus i'm sure they would let you try a few so you could get a better idea/feel of various pistols. It really comes down to personal preference, and what feels right for you.

Whichever you get you'll have a heap of fun shooting IPSC and any other handgun matches you find. There's something about having a guy with a timer hovering behind your shoulder and the need to get all the rounds downrange with decent accuracy in quick time and run around switching mags while under the clock that really stirs the juices. It's what convinced me to actually get my RPAL instead of just dropping some money on the local Rent-A-Gun range every 6 months or so.

None of the guns you list are bad options in any way at all. But do try to find your own nearby Rent-A-Gun range to try them out for yourself. The styles you want to make sure you try are the plastic framed guns with strikers such as the Glock and M&P and the plastic framed guns with hammers such as the STI GP6 and CZ P01 and finally the all metal guns with hammers such as the Sig P220 and any of the CZ's with metal frames. From all that determine which feels the best to you and then which of each of those you tried feels the best to you.

For example I shoot a couple of Glocks just fine but they feel far too square and "blocky" even in my large glove size hands. Of the plastic frame guns I really like the M&P or the GP6. But out of the whole 10 or so 9's that I tried I went with a CZ Shadow. But this is all highly personal so get thee hence to a Rent-A-Gun range and try a lot of them out for yourself. Even if it means a two day drive to a city with such a range the savings in buying and selling to find what fits and the time spent doing all that will more than make up for the expense. And I'm sure there's other things to do once you get there to make it worthwhile.

Since I see you're in Regina all this may be a bit hard to do since it means you're looking at a LONG drive since I've not heard of a Rent-A-Gun range in Saskatchewan. Maybe talk to a few folks in your club and see if you can arrange to try out a number of the other member's guns. And by all means show up with your own ammo and leave them with a couple of magazines worth as thanks.

For Production Division, you want a 9x19

Production Division (of IPSC) is the obvious place to start.

I'd veto the Walther, the Sig, and the XD right off. While the Glock 19 is one of my favorite pistols, the Glock 19 is legal for Production Division only if the barrel is OEM Glock; an aftermarket barrel moves the G19 from Production Division into Standard Division.

In addition to the S&W M&P and the Glock 17 I would also suggest consideration of the STI GP6, the CZ SP01 Shadow, and the Tanfoglio Stock II.

For ipsc starting out I would go with a glock. They are the inexpensive, and the mags are inexpensive as well. It is not the ideal ipsc platform. For production division, I think the tanfoglio stock II is pretty good. The gun is about 3 times as much and the mags are three times as much. But the difference between a decent gun and and excellent one is inconsequential compared to the difference between the skills of the shooter. In my opinion the score in ipsc is culmination of about 99% Shooter skill, and 1% choice of gun.

You wouldn't regret the XDM, I was on the fence about which one to get as well. Went to the store and fondled them, XDM came out on top. Accurate too!
