Hello everyone, I'm interested in buying a new Rem 700 model 84461. It's a OD green stock, bull barrel with an action that seems better than the cheaper model. I'm new in this and it seems like a nice one to start with. Cost is 1500$. I would like some advise on if its a good deal and if its a good rifle. Any advise is more than welcome. I put a down payment on it. It's the last one on the shelves in store and everybody say that prices will get to 1700-1800$ next spring. Help me out on this one, got one month to think about it. Thanks
First thing, lay out your immediate and then future goals. There are so many ways to go with this and given the money you are able to spend, a variety of platforms to choose.
If you want to compete, then that will limit more choices then if you just want to shoot rocks and gong for fun.
Bench shooting or Prone or a little of both influences some gear... and so forth.
So there is no way to say one thing is good or not good. It really boils down to your goals.
Personally, I would look at the best barrel and chamber I could get on my rifle as that really determines the accuracy potential of a rifle. Then stock and trigger to make sure I can fit. Optics so I can see and adjust for conditions.
The action is really not all that important at your stage so you really can go with several modern options.
As part of your overal budget, put more emphasis on reloading and optics vs the factory rifle. Most factory rifles today can shoot reasonable well... some better then others but if you choose to start with a factory barrel, don't invest alot in it.... you have no way to know if you are getting value until it is shot.
If you like that rifle and it fits you and your current needs, go for it. Get it properly bedded. Good base and rings with better optics and have at it.
As was already mentioned, you can start with factory and change nearly everything. Or you can get quality upfront for really no more money, and have better results out of the gate.
Factory is easy.. buy and leave. And then fix
Semi custom will require working to get the right parts to assemble that rifle.... but the end results should be better.
