Ive decided its time to upgrade my old remington pump .270 before this years hunting season.Ive narrowed it down between the 7mm rem mag and the 30-06.I hunt moose, deer, and sometimes black bear.I like the 7mm but i think the 30-06 is more than enough gun and alot cheaper to shoot.Looking for some opinions. Thanks

I'd keep the 270 for deer, and get a heavier thumper for a moose gun...45-70 if you like levers, or a 35 whelen in a bolt...

Or get a nice -06 in whatever you want...:D

The 7mm rem mag is a fine cartridge and will do everything you want, but its a long action gun will be little more heavy. the 30.06 is also a fine cartidge I own two of them.
But its 2009 and there for me are better choices that the .06.
My favorite would be a 7mmwsm but not many manufactures make them, I would think a 300wsm would be next best coice or maybe the 270wsm.
I am amazed how these wsm shoot at the range I belong to with factory ammo.

7mm Remington Magnum and 30-06 both use long actions. At any rate, the weight savings between a long and short action is relatively small.

Of the two, I would choose the 30-06. I wouldn't bother with any of the new short magnums because they don't really offer a meaningful improvement over previous cartridges and the ammo/components are much more expensive. Get a 30-06 because it is less expensive to feed and use the savings to practice more and build proficiency. This will get you further ahead of the game than any magnum.

You will never get a good answer to this question.:nest: You should look at some rifles you're interested in, handle them, see what feel's good to you. See if you can shoot someone elses .30-06, and 7mag and decide what's right for YOU. This thread can..... and might go on for days with no definate answer.:) In my opinion, you should get both :D.

If you have lots of money buy a few good guns for different jobs, if your a poor SOB like me the 06 is the way to go.

I went with a savage that was on sale for my bought firearm.

7mm Mag vs 30-06

The 7mm Mag has great ballistics and the recoil is similar but it requires at least a 24" barrel and is better yet with a 26".

The 30-06 does just fine with a 22" barrel and that makes it much nicer to carry around. Ammo is cheaper and more readily available. It also allows for 1 more round in the magazine in the same rifle. Also comes in the same gun as your 270win if that is of consideration.

Both are great rounds just depends on your personal criteria.

I like the 7mm over the 30 calibers myself, but do not have an answer to explain this, and has nothing to do with velocity, or killing effect as I own many 30 cals in all kinds of cartridges.

I just like how the 6.5mm and 7mms were built to fly...... with High B.Cs and long bullets

There is not much your 270 will not do over anything else at respectable ranges, in this country. ( I do not care for the 270 myself but again, has little to do with its effect on game, and more ballistics)

The '06 will do what you want handily. As for there being "better" choices out there, there aren't many that offer that amount of killing power with that amount of recoil and that amount of rifles to choose from and that amount of factory loads. Choose virtually any other cartridge and something will drop out of that equation.
That said, the 7mm Rem Mag is a great cartridge as well, and shares most of the .30-06's qualities.

I have both the 7mm and 30-06 in Remington BDL Left hand and I always end up using the 30-06 for some reason -- OH YES I Remenber now IT WORKS !!!
Buy the 30-06 - Bullet wieghts for anything from Varmits to 220 grain for the big MEAN NASTYS !!
