I am putting together a AR Project, and I need some advice. I just bought myself a Armalite Lower, and was wondering what options I had for an upper?

1) Do I have to stay with .223, or can I go to .308?
2) What brand of upper do you recommend?
3) If I buy an upper what else do I need... (Mags.... handguards etc...)

thanx

1) 223 and 308 are different sized recievers
2) I like RRA for uppers, or if you can find them colt and diemaco
3) You really should go have a look around at ar15.com ;)

You cannot put a .308 upper on a standard lower. You do have some calibre choices; they are all short enough to work. Is your lower stripped, or is it complete?
You are going to need the entire upper assembly. I would suggest a flattop, because they are much more versatile from the standpoint of sighting options. FWIW one of my uppers is from an M-16A1, my flattop is a DPMS Lo-Pro.
If your lower is stripped, you are going to need a LOT of parts and accessories.

Well, you could go 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39, or 6.8SPC (I think). But nothing into the .308 length. The magwell is the biggest limiting factor.

The AR10 series have a larger magwell to accomodate the .308.

AR help

From an economy point of view .223 is the way to go. 6.5 Grendel uppers and ammo are very expensive and until 6.8 components become common shooting it is very expensive as well. 7.62x39 is a reasonable option cost- wise. With the wide variety of .223 bullet weights available (from about 45-80 grains) you also get considerable flexibility to pick a bullet for the intended purpose. Twist rate is also a consideration. 1:9 is the accepted middle of the road acceptable twist for nearly all bullet weights although many people report good accuracy from 1:8 and 1:7 even with lighter bullets. Your mileage may vary.

Remember that if you decide to change calibers later, only the upper needs to be changed,. The lower remains as is. In fact, for a caliber change you can get away with just a new barrel, bolt and mag if you have the ability/tools to do the swap.

In the states there is a company that makes a modular lower reciever for .223 ( 762x39, 9mm, 22LR ) then makes a adapater for 762x39 AK mags, and then one for 308. Its about 450 USD for the reciever and like 150.00 for the extra adpaters.

A pistol caliber upper will fit a .223 lower, although a magazine well adapter is necessary. If you will be shooting primarily on an indoor range, 9mm would make sense. Otherwise, .223 may be the best choice. Or, you can install a .22lr conversion kit in the .223 for indoor range shooting.
Because the AR system is modular, there are a great many options. If you get carried away, the cost can become substantial, though.

I read an article in Weapons for Law Enforcement (US mag - can't find it here!) about this setup. Medusa? Or something to that effect. Looked like a pretty cool idea! Fast change barrel too...

Who sells an upper in 7.62x39? This is pretty interesting info!

All you need to convert a .223 upper to 7.62x39 are a barrel, bolt (just the bolt, don't need a new carrier, you can use the same one) and a 7.62x39 magazine. All other parts are interchangeable.
