need some cheap reactive target ideas?

going out with some friends tomorrow to shoot some clays and my buddy said we can bring some reactive targets as long as theyre biodegradable. so were going to the grocery store to get some exploding targets. might grab a couple of watermellons if i find some cheap enough. what else do you guys shoot at thats cheap and makes a big mess?
 
haha nice thanks for the ideas guys. i got some big watermelons, grapefruit and some squash. ill try and make a video of a 3" magnum slug exploding one of the melons for your viewing pleasure :D
 
couple things we learned today. the hp9 has no issues exploding a watermelon, a big one at that, with a 3" magnum slug. we found little pieces over 30 feet away from the stick that was holding it up :D does a nice job taking care of squash too, haha. also with the 14" barrel its 10 times louder than with the long barrels. and thats with bird shot. one question, can i shoot slugs through a mod choke? my buddy let me borrow his 870 barrel and it has a mod choke in it. i didnt wanna take a chance with slugs so id go back to the short barrel for slut parties as i called them. great fun, video to follow once he sends it to me
 
oh good call, didnt think of those, ill try and find some for next time. should be in a couple weeks or so. i walked around the grocery store looking for things that would explode nicely and wouldnt require me to clean up after, lol
 
you know your a gun nut when: you browse the fruits and vegetables section trying to determine which would make the biggest mess when shot at. And about the slugs, rifled slugs are designed to be fired through any choke, except for tighter modern chokes like used for turkey hunting. My rule of thumb is full choke or less is good to go, never had any problems. They are made under sized to eliminate the chance of over-pressure with the variances of shotgun bbl dimensions. The "rifling" is just there to allow the outside diameter to compress as it passes through a choke tube. Mod is good to go, no need to worry. And cuz someone had to say it....

Ha, I have been at the grocery store with a buddy looking for cheap targets before as well! Ha ha, we were all excited and chatting about the best targets in the produce section and then noticed how people around us were looking at us all weird....oh well! We bought some fruit and cheap cans of pop and off we went!!

neddless to say, we had fun!! :D
 
i dont know about canada, but here in NZ there are a couple of brands of fizzy drink/ soda pop / tasty carbonated beverage ( whatever you prefer ) .. that you can buy in a tray of 20x bottles for around $15 NZ .. red, blue, green yellow, and the ever boring, Clear ...

but they are plastic bottles so easy to clean up ..

generally they are for kids parties.. so i just tell people its a big kids party, when im buying 4x trays at a time :D
 
we were trying to look for stuff that we wouldnt have to clean up after and that the birds would clean when we were done. ill start collecting milk jugs for our next visit and start letting fruit rot in the house, hope the wife doesnt mind, haha.

thanks for the help with the chokes, we werent too sure and i didnt want some kind of barrel splitting explosion. my buddy has the video on his facebook page and im not sure how to get it off, i did however screen cap the bastard exploding. i dont want to disappoint my fellow gun nutz, so heres a little bit of shotgun #### :D

also notice that im wearing my 48 slug belt, it had loads ranging from basic target load, large game load, 2 3/4 slugs, and 3" magnum slugs. just in case we came across a coyote or a vicious duck or those little black and red birds that kept attacking us. lol. managed to hit my first clay aswell so that was a big bonus.
 
Expired cans of chunky soup make great targets! I hit one with a 3" magnum slug and there was bits of chicken noodle everywhere. Just pick up the shredded tin after and recycle it. :)
 
haha yeah it reacted well to the slug. it did as expected, exploded. my buddy thought he'd be able to get himself some smaller pieces to eat but there were none to be had.

chunky soup would be great too. i may visit the recycling box in the basement and start keeping things like pop cans and empty bottles for exploding reasons
 
hehehe thanks for the pic uchi, I had a good laugh! Me and a buddy had planned a range trip for today for the same purpose but it looks like it might rain pretty good. We've got some "cleanup required" items though. No biggie, I want to see what buckshot does to a TV.... but who doesnt?
