Need some Enfield Expertise

(Sorry, this could have went in the milsurp forum. It is a post WWII enfield though. Feel free to move if necessary.)

Hey guys,

I may be the stupidest person here, but I cannot figure this out. I've had my enfield for only a little while, and it's my first one. I've taken it to the range once and was cleaning it today and went to put it back together.

However I can not get the bolt to close the whole way.

I believe it is this small piece sicking out the end that is not letting the bolt move the whole way forward. I'm thinking this is an extractor, but i'm not quite sure. Sorry, i'm not the most knowledgeable on the subject. If anyone could give me a few hints, i'd appreciate it.

I cannot turn the bolt down to the right all the way. It goes about half way. I know you have to kind of push in on the bolt, but it won't go in any fartther into the chamber. If it won't go into the chamber farther, I can't turn the bolt down and the rifle doesn't work obviously.

Any help is appreciated.

Tighten the bolt nose, it's half way off. It's threaded so just tighten it. If it doesn't tighten easily it could be cross threaded, it should NOT require tools to turn, in fact it should be almost loose. Oh yeah, and all Enfield stuff is in Milsurps - some of the most knowledgeable Enfield people in the world are there. (and guys like me too)

No, this has hapened to most of us at one time or another; we just don't talk about it! You at least had the guts to ask.

At least you didn't put the rifle together with the bolt-head missing, as has been done. Had one walk into my newspaper office when I was Down East: Number 4 (just like yours) that the guy had forgotten to put the bolt-head back onto. He loaded and fired it without a bolt-head!!!!!!!!!

I unscrewed the empty from the bolt. The bolt body was split lengthways, end of the firing-pin burnt right off. The wonderful surgeons at the James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander actually got all the brass out of his son's eye, but the ruptured ear-drum took a long time to heal.

There are any number of firearms which can be misassembled; the Number 4 is only one of them.

wow, firing without the bolt head is unreal!

holy smokes. Guess thats why we should all really wear eye protection and ear protection.

well i'm glad this place is here. limits my chances of reassembling it wrong. and if I can't figure something out, there are lots of people who know what their talking about!
