Need some help deciding on a gun

I am looking into possibly getting a good centerfire in the future (not right now as I don't have the funds). I will be hunting elk, deer, moose, ect with it so I am thinking something like a 7mm rem mag, 300 win mag, or the WSM calibers (but I want to stick to magnum)

I would like it to have a detachable magazine/or clip, a stainless barrel, and either a synthetic/composite, or laminate stock (something that will withstand damage a bit more). I would also like it to be fairly heavey, maybe around the 8lbs range as I can hold steadier with a heavier gun.

I am willing to spend a fair bit on this, as I want this gun to last a lifetime, but don't want to spend too much that I will be broke for a long time either. I am going to say around the $1500 range or less (probably no less than $800), but that might change with time.

The Tikka T3 looks real good with the laminate stock/stainless barrel or the T3 lite with the synthetic stock. Are there any other choices out there with my particular criteria?

gun decision

I suggest a .338 magnum with a floorplate instead of one of those get lost quick clips.A nice laminate stock would add to the needed weight you are looking for too. A 225 Nosler Partition or other premium bullet would be my choice for those big critters.
Remington, Ruger, Tikka, Savage all make rifles in this caliber, it's just a matter of getting one that fits you.:)
 
The 7 mil mag will not let you down, as for rifle, get out to gun shops, you said your not quite ready , so now is the time to scout out the shops, shoulder as many as you can for fit, work the actions, get a feel for that investment :cool:

I agree with 303 carbine hinge floorplate is better, as for calibre a 7mm Rem is one of my favorites but i also love the 338WM, I bought a 270WSM in a Winchester featherweight and that gun has been one of the most accurate out of the box guns i have owned and good power with 130-150gr bullets.

.338 sounds good, but it may be a little to much for me to handle (recoil wise). How about a compromise; maybe a 325WSM?

I like the clip, just because most of my hunts are done on quads, and I like beeing able to quickly jump off the quad, grab the clip, jam it in, and shoot :D.

So far, I have been preatty good about not loosing clips, but its bound to happen one of these days. But I am sure I do want a clip.

I currently have a Schultz and Larson 7mm rem mag, with a hinged floor plate, and is without a doubt one of the nicest guns I have, but it doesn't quite have exactly what I want (sythetic stainless)

The clip may sound good, but when you see a big 10 point deer on the trail standing broad side and your scrabbling to find that clip (thats probably sitting back at camp on the dash of your truck!) you'll be sorry!

I've heard some good things about the wheatherby Mark V stainless in a 340 wby mag. May be hard to find ammo, but would would last a lifetime in your price range.
 
I often wonder where all these lost magazines go... There must be some awfully absent minded hunters out there. These must be the same guys that put chains on their wallets I suppose!:rolleyes:
The day I start forgetting or losing integral parts of my hunting kit, I think I will take up another sport. In 35 years of hunting and I have never misplaced or lost a magazine for my rifle.:confused:

A detachable magazine is a great option on a hunting rifle if you want that option go for it. The T-3 is very good quality and superb value for your money, you won't regret it.:)
 
Thanks again for the responces guys. I am still preatty much stuck on the detachable magazine, as upposed to the hinged floor plate, just because I find a clip is much easier to grab, and put in, as upposed to a single shot, and quite often, I will have gotten 2 or sometimes even 3 (not very often) on game.

I quite often find myself shooting my dads Browning T-bolt stainless stalker with the detachable magazine, and I like that better.

The Tikka sounds great. The Sako looks nice as well (in the stainless/sythetic option), but you pay a fair bit of money for it. What is the general concences on the Savages with accutrigger?

Savages are great guns...but you may be dissapointed on fit and finish when compared to the companies you've mentioned.

Best bet would be to go in and feel the rifles. A tikka may look great and sound like a "best buy", but you may not feel comfortable with it. A savage on the other hand may not be your first choice, but might fit you better!

I went into the gun store a week or so ago, for these same purposes, and was able to look at a few, but didn't have time for a complete "inspection." I did look at the Tikka's, the Weatherby Vangaurd (what are your thouhgs on this gun?), and the Sako's. I was fairly happy with the fit and finnish on all these guns.

The tikka T3 lite almost seems to lite (I guess they don't call it lite for nothing :rolleyes: :D), where the Sako seems to fit me a bit better. Than again, the Sako is nearly twice the price. Its going to take me a while to finally decide, and when I have made my decision, its in my character to change my mind 20 times again, just to settle back on my original decision :D
 
My last purchace was a Savage 111 in 300WM, one of the package deals that comes with a crappy scope.

Detachable Mag, new type with the release in front of the mag, not the old one where the release was on the side.

Removed the scope and rings and replaced with Buris z rings and a Bushnell 3200 3-9x 40.

I really didn't need it but I got tireed of my Ruger M77 7mmRM with the hindged floor plate.

I have an older Tikka 695 in 25-06 with a mag but it has a side release that I'm not fond of.

The new savage is a great combination and the price was under $500 :)

and the wife had no chioce, it eas a present to me from me as a reward for getting a pay increase :)


PS deadly with 180grn on moose and deer, and one very unfortunate coyote :)

I'm one of those awfully absent minded hunters. I was hunting on a rainy BC day with my LE No.5. We came back to the truck, safed our rifles. I removed the magazine from the JC and had a sandwich. We then packed up and drove to another clearcut and planned to hike in. Where was my magazine? Back at our lunch stop of course.....lying on the side of the road. That's my matching magazine in an all matching JC!!!!!!!!
 
CZ452shooter, just a heads up. Elwood Epps sporting goods has just reduced their prices on Tikka's and have everything from .222 to 338 mag.
