Gargoyle, read the linky that troutseeker put up, it has the FRT information just under the pics of the shotgun. A 8.5 inch barrel Rem 870 with a pistol grip IS non-restricted, end of story, full stop, NON-restricted!!!
As far as I know, Dlask tired to have it's own model called the smd12 as a propriety thing... That smd12 has been deemed "restricted" by the rcmp, despite it being a rem 870... Remember, Canadian firearm law is nothing if not confusing... How the rcmp can say two identical guns, one with 870 stamped on it and one with smd12 stamped on it, fall under different classifications in the system, is beyond me!!! I guess the rcmp are trying to say that this is a "new" type of firearm, the "smd12" that is, and needs to be "classified", and as a result, deemed it to be restricted. But, given an existing 870 receiver, with a completely legal pistol grip, NOT a collapsable or folding stock, and a manufactured barrel length of 8.5, it follows the "rules"... and is deemed non-restricted...
You have to understand that this issue has been "beat to death" here on CGN and the old timers who keep on top of the issues get a little bent when newbies ask the same questions. But, in my opinion, there are no dumb questions and it's good that people are asking questions about the legal status of the non-restricted 8.5 inch barrel shotgun.
All I can say is read, read, read, and if in doubt, when you buy one of the shotguns, print off and keep a copy of the FRT info with the gun... Lots of guys carry it with guns they think the "average" police officer might question.
Cheers
