I've got a friend that just purchased a large property in bear territory in central/northern Ontario and has been coming across an increasing number of the buggers over the past few trips up there. He's looking for a small shottie for protection while on the trail. If you guys could post some pics of the smallest non-restricted shotties you've got so I could show him what's out there and legal for him to carry while out I'd, and he'd appreciate it.. Thanks!

Here we go again... It is UNRESTRICTED !!! I carry mine in the bush when bowhunting, prospecting, hiking with the wife and kids, etc...

Just search the threads and read up on it.

I have and the debate seems to constantly go back and forth so please forgive me for being slightly confused on the subject as it seems 99% of the people on here are. Speaking with a verifier and our area firearms officer, if it's under the 660mm you're getting busted around my area and then we can fight it out in court..... not really the option I'm looking for! Maybe I should re word this thread to

pics of all greater than 660mm shotties (but still short)....

I really don't mean to sounds like a little pissy pants, I'm not. I just think from reading all the different threads on the subject there really isn't a 100% answer to this question as of now. And before it happens, as soon as you simply say "yes there is it's unrestricted" someone is just going to say, no its restricted. I have very little legal background so a lot of the legal jargon isn't going to make sense to me, nor most of the others on here... I really didn't want an argument on this topic, there are plenty on here. I simply wanted to show a friend some pics of some "bear defense" shotties that he will not end up in court over.

Gargoyle, read the linky that troutseeker put up, it has the FRT information just under the pics of the shotgun. A 8.5 inch barrel Rem 870 with a pistol grip IS non-restricted, end of story, full stop, NON-restricted!!!

As far as I know, Dlask tired to have it's own model called the smd12 as a propriety thing... That smd12 has been deemed "restricted" by the rcmp, despite it being a rem 870... Remember, Canadian firearm law is nothing if not confusing... How the rcmp can say two identical guns, one with 870 stamped on it and one with smd12 stamped on it, fall under different classifications in the system, is beyond me!!! I guess the rcmp are trying to say that this is a "new" type of firearm, the "smd12" that is, and needs to be "classified", and as a result, deemed it to be restricted. But, given an existing 870 receiver, with a completely legal pistol grip, NOT a collapsable or folding stock, and a manufactured barrel length of 8.5, it follows the "rules"... and is deemed non-restricted...

You have to understand that this issue has been "beat to death" here on CGN and the old timers who keep on top of the issues get a little bent when newbies ask the same questions. But, in my opinion, there are no dumb questions and it's good that people are asking questions about the legal status of the non-restricted 8.5 inch barrel shotgun.

All I can say is read, read, read, and if in doubt, when you buy one of the shotguns, print off and keep a copy of the FRT info with the gun... Lots of guys carry it with guns they think the "average" police officer might question.

Cheers

If you are still in doubt and/or don't want to go this route, there is the Norinco N870-14.00 ( HP9) 12 gauge pump with 14 in barrel and a full stock for $385 at www.marstar.ca and a few other vendors that advertise here.

just show them your resistration certificate that says none restricted if do any thing call your cssa rep (you are a cssa member right) and tell them you've been un justly arrested and are being detained illigaly and give us more ammo to use against the nazi's

Hi folks,
Here is a pic of the standard 20" 870 compared to the 8.5" version (with a short LOP stock). Definitely a lot smaller package, ballistically I found a loss of about 25 fps per inch of barrel loss, that was through the chrono.
